About the Author
Craig Forcese is an Associate Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. There, he teaches administrative law, public international law, and national security law and runs the annual foreign policy practicum. Much of his present research and writing relates to democratic accountability, national security, and international law. Prior to joining the law school faculty, he practiced law with the Washington D.C. office of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, specializing in international trade law. Craig has law degrees from the University of Ottawa and Yale University, a B.A. from McGill, and an M.A. in international affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University. He is a member of the bars of Ontario, New York and the District of Columbia.

He is author of "National Security Law" (Irwin Law, 2008)and co-author of " The Laws of Government" (Irwin Law 2005) and "International Law: Doctrine, Practice and Theory " (Irwin Law, 2007).

Kent Roach is a Professor of Law at the University of Toronto where he holds the Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2002. His eleven books include Constitutional Remedies in Canada (winner of the 1997 Owen Prize), Due Process and Victims' Rights: The New Law and Politics of Criminal Justice (shortlisted for the 1999 Donner Prize), The Supreme Court on Trial: Judicial Activism or Democratic Dialogue (shortlisted for the 2001 Donner Prize), September 11: Consequences for Canada (named one of the five most significant books of 2003 by the Literary Review of Canada) and (with Robert J. Sharpe) Brian Dickson: A Judge's Journey (winner of the 2004 J. W. Dafoe Prize). He is co-editor of the first and second editions of Global Anti-Terrorism Law and Policy and has served with the Commission of Inquiries into both Maher Arar and the bombing of Air India Flight 182. He has appeared before working groups and legislative committees in Canada, Indonesia and the United States and is a member of the International Task Force on Terrorism, Democracy and the Law.

Most other books on OAE (and there are very few) tend to load their text with highly technical research material that can deter the entry level reader, not that this book avoids the essential technicalities, but it gets the level and balance about right...The text is an easy read...liberally illustrated with explanatory diagrams, graphs and large screen prints from actual OAE instruments, all in monochrome...Hall is a hugely experienced and productive educator in the auditory field and Dhar is a real enthusiast for otoacoustic emissions, actively engages in a wide range of clinical and cutting-edge research on the topic. The combination has created the first authoritative entry level text on OAEs which will meet the needs of clinicians, students and instructors. About the Author
Sumitrajit (Sumit) Dhar has studied Audiology and Hearing Science at the Mumbai University (India), Utah State University, and Purdue University. At Purdue, Sumit completed his Ph.D. in 2001 under the tutelage of Professors Glenis Long and Arnold Tubis. Between 1992 and 2000, Sumit has held several clinical positions as audiologist, audiology-supervisor, and clinic manager. His first academic appointment was at Indiana University, Bloomington.

James W. Hall III received his PhD in audiology from Baylor College of Medicine under the direction of Dr. James Jerger. Since then, he has held clinical and academic audiology positions at major university medical schools. Dr. Hall is now Clinical Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Communicative Disorders at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he maintains a clinical practice and is an instructor in the Doctor of Audiology on-site and distance learning programs. Dr. Hall s main research interests are auditory neurophysiology, auditory processing disorders, early identification of hearing loss in infants, and tinnitus/hyperacusis. Dr. Hall lectures internationally on these topics.

Bill Porter had been told that the venerable hermetic tradition in China had also succumbed, but he went looking anyway. What he found, Taoist and Buddhist monks and nuns living in huts and caves deep in the mountains of central China, is more than a revelation, it is a glimmer of hope for the future of religion in China.

Porter, a Hong Kong-based writer whose previous books were published under the pen name Red Pine ( The Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma ), lived in a Taiwanese monastery for three years in the 1970s and later translated works of some Chinese hermits long admired for their virtue. When travel to China opened up in the late 1980s, Porter began to search for hermits who might have survived under years of communism. His story is unusual, but his "encounters"--actually, brief interviews--produce not subtle observations but statements of gnomic profundity: " . . . the Tao is empty. It can't be explained." Still, Porter showed undeniable bravery as he trekked through the Chungnan Mountains in central China to interview more than 20 male and female hermits. Some hermits are circumspect about politics, having suffered under the Cultural Revolution, while others, like an 85-year-old monk who had lived in a cave for 50 years, are oblivious to the political changes. Porter's historical and literary reflections show sensitivity to his subject, but this book seems aimed only at those interested in such spiritual quests. Some of the photographs are starkly spectacular.

In this first-person narrative, the author relates his journey to seek out the religious hermits of China, who left civilization and chose to live alone as monks in the mountains of China, quietly practicing their Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian faith. Sprinkled with Eastern religious philosophy, Chinese current affairs, and personal observations, this travel book reveals a secluded world very few people believed survived the purges of the Chinese Communists. The author wisely includes transcripts from conversations with many of the hermits, both men and women, and through their words the reader comes away with a better understanding of their lives and their reasons for deciding to live their harsh existence. This is not intended to be a scholarly study but an invitation to the public to discover this relatively unknown aspect of Chinese religious culture. Recommended for public libraries.

Trudging the mountains of China in search of Taoist and Buddhist hermits.

This is a great book about Taoist and Buddhist hermits living in the mountains of China after the Cultural Revolution. In 1989, the author trudged the mountains of China searching for hermits, and he found many monks and nuns living a solitary contemplative life. Most of them lived in austere living conditions that would be unbearable for Western culture people to tolerate. But, as long as the hermits could do their daily Taoist or Buddhist practices, then they tolerated the harsh living conditions that they encountered living in the mountains of China. The author interviewed several of the monks and nuns, and the spiritual depth of these devote individuals is profound. After reading this book about the hermit monks and nuns that live on so little, with almost no material conveniences, but yet are so dedicated to the spiritual life; I gained a new understanding of --- SPIRITUAL DEDICATION.--- Also, I am very grateful to the Divine for letting me be born and live in the USA, with all the modern comforts and conveniences that we have in this country.

This book is almost unique, in that there are ...

This book is almost unique, in that there are not many similar accounts. Very few westerners (or, for that matter, Chinese) have ventured into the mountains of far-west China to meet the Buddhist and Taoist hermits there. Bill Porter records their perspectives as they spoke to the author first-hand, in his arduous attempts to locate them even after being told multiple times that they do not exist. His account includes opinions here and there which Americans should probably heed ("If your roots aren't deep and you practice Zen, you can practice all your life and never get anywhere"--Sheng-lin). Having spent a decade in China with a few visits with similar monks--though without climbing vertical mountains or icy passes--I found I wanted to hear more from these renunciates, and probably less from Porter. But this is a diary of his travels as much as an account of Buddhist thought in its various forms, and deserves to be read by students of modern China.

A pleasant read for the spirit.

A story of a Westerner exploring the mysterious hermit lifestyle of the Taoists priests and Buddhists monks. As I was reading through each chapter, each words and paragraphs took my imagination on an appreciative-spiritual journey along with the author and his companions.
The reader will travel along side and understand the author's great effort in his search of meanings of the East from traversing through chaotic political difficulties and harsh geographical terrains in order to meet with spiritual masters and their disciples whom dedicated their whole life in finding Truths about Life, soul, spirit, body and mind through material meagerness, seclusion and meditation in deep forests and high mountains; a pleasant read for those who wishes to escape the physical weariness and mundane-ness of society and modern life.
Existentially, because of the language barrier, meanings were lost through western linguistic translations, the author didn't fully grasp the concepts of what is eastern-ly spiritual; as science is more of the West and Spirit is of the East.

Old Salazar held the pearl to the light and turned it around and around. He gave it to his son, who had found the pearl in the underwater cave of the lagoon.

"You have in your hand the Pearl of the Universe, the Paragon of Pearls, the Great Pearl of Heaven!" he said.

When the pearl merchants wouldn't meet his price, Blas Salazar presented the fabulous gem to the Madonna of the church of La Paz. "The House of Salazar shall be favored in heaven, now and forever," he proudly proclaimed and firmly believed.

But there were others who believed a curse had surely been brought down upon Salazar and Son and their fleet, for the Manat Diablo, monster devilfish, would reclaim his treasure.

And it was young Ramon who would have to undo the evil he had begun.

The Black Pearl

The book The Black Pearl has a very interesting story. This book takes place in La Paz, Baja California. In this book, Ramon wants to prove to his father, Blas Salazar, that he is just as good as Sevillano, Ramon's worst enemy and Ramon's father's best pearl diver, at pearl diving. Manta Diablo, the monster of the deep, guards "The Pearl of the Heavens," the ocean's biggest pearl, that Ramon wants to dive for. Ramon got "The Pearl of the Heavens" and brought back home. When Ramon tells his father about the pearl, his father gives it to the church. Luzum, an old Indian tells Ramon that he should give it back to the Manta Diablo because the monster will come after him. I recommend this book to both girls and boys who are at the age of thirteen and under because I don't think people over the age of thirteen would be interested in this book. I don't think that people over the age of thirteen would like the book because I don't it's exciting enough. Overall I thought this was a good book.

Deadly Greed

On the surface this is a story set in Baja, Mexico, about a pearl diving family. The reader learns much about this industry and the religion and superstition so prevelant among the natives there. However, the greed that overcomes many of the characters and the consequences of their greed, can happen anywhere. Those who lust for fortune often pay the price. In The Black Pearl the reader must decide whether the Manta Diablo is real, or a superstition. A must-read for grades 4 through 8 (although many adults will appreciate and enjoy this story).

SY-My book is The Black Pearl By Scot O' Dell. It is about a boy named Ramon who becomes a pearl salesman in his fathers business. The boy finds a huge pearl in the lagoon of the monster Manta Diablo. Worth so much money that the four huge pearl salesmen in their town cannot pay for it. The pearl seems great but soon causes many misfortunes. The story is set in a town called La Paz somewhere in Baja California. I am guessing that it is in the eighteen hundreds because there are no cars and all the boats are either canoes, or sail boats. The main characters are the boy named Ramon, who is sixteen years old and works in his fathers pearl business called Salazar and Son. An Indian named Luzon, who teaches Ramon how to dive for pearls, but was against Ramon diving in the lagoon of the Manta Diablo because Luzon fears the creature. The last main character is a man who is called The Sevillano. The Sevillano is a very strong man who claims he has done incredible things all across the world and is not very good friends with Ramon. I would recommend this book. It was sort of slow at the beginning, but then it got really interesting. I would recommend it to boys and girls at the age of twelve because even though it wasn't very long, it was kind of complicated. Anyone who enjoys mysteries would probably like this book.
