Here Da Liu, president of the T'ai Chi Ch'uan Society of New York, provides both an exposition of the history and philosophy of this ancient practice and a guide to the methods of meditation, breathing, and concentration useful for the practitioner. Although the book is not conceived as a manual on t'ai chi itself, it does provide rudimentary instructions. Westerners may take issue with such claims as immortality that may be obtained through Taoist disciplines, but this book offers general or informed readers an accessible introduction to a distinctive form of Eastern spiritual practice. About the Author
Master DA LIU, born in 1906 in Kiangsu Province, China, has been studying T'ai Chi for more than fifty years. When he came to the United States in 1956, he was hailed by Newsweek as one of the first T'ai Chi Ch-uan teachers in this country. He has written nine books on T'ai Chi Ch-uan, meditation, and Taoism, which have been translated into many languages, and has tauaght and lectured widely.

quite good, but highly in depth

This book is an often overlooked masterpiece on the subject of Tai chi chuan and meditation. Master Da Liu writes extensively on exercises from his own practice. Including coordination of qi circulation with the movements of the Yang Long Form. He also discusses the basics of Taoist meditation. A must for serious tai chi students.

Covers more than just Tai Chi

Excellent read for any student of martial arts, not just for T'ai Chi. - During my brief period studying Chinese-Indonesia arts my Sifu recommended this book. I got more than I expected and wished I found it sooner. Most people know Tai Chi was created as a complement to meditation, but this explains why. This book will not teach you Tai Chi but explains the relationship of the movements in Tai Chi to the movement of Chi in the body. Includes diagrams and explanations of meridians, I Ching and Tai Chi Tu.

Tai Chi Chuan and Meditation

Da Liu presents a solid background of Chinese history on the evolution of Tai Chi and meditation, as interlocking techniques for bodily health and spiritual growth. He talks about energy in relation to individual Tai Chi movements, as well as providing information on the flow of energy through the systems of the body. The book was published when he was 80, but has a fluid, modern feel to it. I recommend this for those who do Tai Chi and practice meditation, or are just interested in the connection between them.

Great Tips, but hard to find them - Get your highlighter ready

This is a good book for XT-1 users. However as expert tips I have to weed through a bunch of general photography knowledge material just to find camera specifics. And its not like you can just skip parts that seem familiar as all the gems are buried. This makes this book hard to use on a practical level and will require several reads and camera time.

For example, there is an entire section on using JPG+RAW presenting arguments for the case. Most of this applies to any photography, but buried in there is specifically what the camera does better for internal JPG than post processing allows.

Over all, the gems of Fuji specific data are worth the purchase, just expect that you would have to work for them. Save your self a lot of time on the second read, highlight the good stuff as you go. The Author would help us all if there were a couple of pages in an appendix which just pointed out the gems and cross referenced some page numbers for more info.

Great info on XT1 and Digital Image Making!

After a long hiatus (as film died, so had my passion for photography), I have returned to the land of light drawing. In my search for something I could understand, I found the XT-1 and its lenses with f-stop rings and bodies with mechanical shutters... something important to an old grognard as myself. I decided to go back to my original passion, and found that digital held its own secrets, its own photographic language, and this piqued my interest. This book not only covers the basic concepts one should learn to excel in photography, but also, and in plain clear speech, covers those digital nuances that will help those who want to excel in the digital realm. A great read... so glad I bought the book. Highly recommended.

Ok for beginners

A few gems of helpful information about specific Fuji X-T1 uses stuffed in the pages of some very elementary information, good only for a beginner looking to understand the basic uses of any DSLR. I wouldn't spend the $12 on this again (Kindle Version), because 95% of the information was already known to me, as I've been shooting for some years now. If you are looking to unlock the hidden secrets to your X-T1, look elsewhere. If you need a good basic understanding of photography such as ISO and the like, and how to apply that to the X-T1, this may be helpful.

Excellent Book to Accompany One on a Journey into Grief

This book introduces a fresh and unique approach on the subjects of loss, grieving, and healing. It redefines the grieving process for those who choose to take the journey. Transformation awaits each who embraces his/her own grief. The author shares his personal journey of loss and grief and how it transformed his life; freeing him to accompany his clients on their unique journeys into their personal losses, subsequent grief, and their individual transformations. The book is quite readable and includes a Life Change Inventory self test, as well as a Response to Loss Inventory. Information is also included about Integra, The Association for Integrative and Transformative Grief. I would highly recommend this book for professionals, as well as laypersons. If you are in the midst of grief, the book might seem overwhelming with its in depth information....finding a health care provider who is familiar with the concepts in this book can temper this and help to guide you through the process, arriving at your own transformation. Dr. Schneider has recently written two new books that speak more to the layperson and may prove less intimidating if you are in the process of grieving. Schneider has the ability to connect with the reader, capturing the essence of the grieving process in a manner that resonates with one's individual story. Schneider's writing style incorporates the use of rich metaphors which is so lacking in the traditional approach commonly used in texts for health care professionals. As a clinician and educator,I have found this book to be an invaluable resource for myself, clients in psychotherapy, and students. Clients have found this model extremely helpful in normalizing and validating their own grieving process, in providing a frame for reflecting on their own journey, and in offering hope for the future. Students have appreciated Schneider's comprehensive approach, his writing style, and rich anecdotal material. As a personal and professional resource, this book should be on the shelves of every healthcare professional, caregiver and layperson who is interetsed in better understanding the multidimentional experience of grief. It is a resource that one will go back to over and over again.

I enjoyed it so much, that I have purchased the remaining books and have received great insight and inspiration which can be applied on a daily basis. Do No Harm�is neurosurgeon Henry Marsh’s memoir, with a particular focus on his mistakes and regrets.

Marsh admits that he grew up privileged. He began his college career studying English, but quit school due to an unrequited love. He took a job working in a mining town hospital, an experience that inspired him to become a surgeon. He returned to Oxford to finish his degree and then attended the Royal Free Medical School in London, the only medical school at the time that did not require him to have any scientific qualifications. �

As a medical student, Marsh worked as a nursing assistant on the psycho-geriatric ward of a long term psychiatric hospital. There he saw many patients who had been given lobectomies at the hospital where he would later train. Lobectomies were an accepted method of treating severe mental disorders, but would often leave the patient worse off than they were before…

A great review/summary of 'Do No Harm' written by a neurosurgeon

Starting with an 8 page (Kindle) summary of the original book we learn about the now retired British neurosurgeon, Henry Marsh, who in some ways wrote an unusual memoir in that he focused mostly on his mistakes and regrets. Get a brief history of how Henry got into neurosurgery plus many concise details of some of his mistakes and successes.

This is followed by same brief bios on some of the "important" people in his book/life. The "Character Analysis" focuses on Henry and his relationships with one of his patients, his mother, himself and his staff.

There are some great titles in the "Themes" section including trust, dark humor, brain as the seat of humanity, retrospection etc. Instaread describes the writing style as that of it being as if Marsh is talking to you with the original book written for a British audience with British phrases.

A thoroughly satisfying companion summary of Dr. Marsh's memoir

When I find a book that I love, I’m often left with a feeling of not wanting to let go. Do No Harm was one of those books. As a medical assistant, I’ve had a fascination with medical biographies and such for quite some time; the latest being Dr. Regina Benjamin’s and this one. When I discovered this summary and analysis of Do No Harm, I purchased it in order to receive more enlightening information about Dr. Marsh. The compact and intelligently written work provided me even further insight regarding this man’s life and it touched on all the important aspects of the material. I specifically enjoyed the chapter on themes, especially “Brains as the Seat of Humanity” and “Dark Humor”; they definitely provided a greater depth to my understanding of what was written. Also, the primer on Dr. Marsh’s important relationships along with the initial summary itself was exactly the insight that I had hoped to discover.

Now, with this companion summary by my side, I look forward to reading the memoir once more, especially since I will be more aware of details that I missed during the first read.

Fascinating, short, and compelling read. I really enjoyed this review of "Do No Harm," a memoir of a neurosurgeon. I lived how this review was formatted, breaking up the analysis into each character, their relationships, and the themes of the book. It even included a summary of the story. This review is great for students who need insight for their essay, or the everyman who wants the powerful message of the book, without denoting the time to read it.
The analysis of Dark Humor as a theme in this book was my favorite part. If nothing else, this review captures that element of "Do No Harm" masterfully.
