The Fairy Tale Formula: How to Win a Man's Heart

I have been having a heck of a time writing this review and I think I've figured out why. I usually don't edit myself, instead choosing to write 100% honest words from the heart, always endeavoring to explain the things that I did not like, or how amazed I am with a book, or whatever the particular case may be. I always make sure that I include, when I post my reviews on the review sites I frequent, that these are my opinions based on my perception of what I've read, and it's opinions like mine that help people decide whether they want to read the book or pass it up. My opinions may be very different from other people - as it seems with this book and this author - so instead of continuing to try to edit myself, I'm just going to write what I have to say and let you, the review reader, decide whether you can ignore the things I found fault with.

Let's start from the beginning - I feel I need to explain why I chose to read this book in the first place. I was contacted by Sage (of Sage's Blog Tours) with a request for both this book and another of Elena's books (His Wants Her Needs). I figured 'What the heck' - I mean, they're short books and what could it hurt getting dating and relationship advice, right? I didn't even read the book descriptions, a bad habit I am working to rectify. Had I read those, at least on HWHN, I would have passed it up completely.

To be honest, the first book I read (HWHN) really left a bad taste in my mouth, and it's because of this book that I didn't even want to pick up the book that I am reviewing now, but I made a promise and I always try to stick to my promises. Throughout the entire book, I kept comparing it to the other book, and that's been happening during this review writing process the last two days. (I've actually never had this problem before and have so much to say on that other book that I haven't even written the review yet, choosing to post a book spotlight on my blog instead.)

I must say that the author comes off much less angry in this book. I actually found her to be helpful, in some parts, in this book, which is the complete opposite of what I found her to be in the other one. She made some sense, made me do some thinking (the other book had that same effect, but instead of opening my brain to possibilities, her anger and attitude that so clearly seeped from the book actually made me question anything and everything people have said to me, and I have since heard that I am not the only one who felt this way), and helped me to see a few things that I do wrong.

For that, and that alone, I am giving this book three out of five stars.

I found the way she broke the book up interesting, the fact that she shared her personal stories (even though she was very clear at the beginning of the book that the "advice" she was passing on was in no way emotionally charged) and those of her "clients" (the "case studies") made you feel like maybe she knew what she was talking about. But does she? As she goes through the book, she explains that she was a (possibly former, it doesn't actually say) burlesque dancer and that her "advice" is based on personal experiences, reading and observing (the men she danced for), an apparent "epiphany" moment, and the aikido she learned from her aikido master boyfriend. There is no educational background that shows that this person is a person that I should be taking advice from. And after reading the other book, it was really hard to believe the stuff she was saying, for the reasons I have noted above. (Note: "...studied extensively with Dr. Pat Allen" is mentioned in her author bio. I had never heard of this Dr. Allen until I looked her up on Bing. Apparently she does relationship seminars, has some books, appears on radio shows, and you can schedule private appointments with her.)

There are some editing issues in this book that the author really should take a look at - some of them hinder readers like me, who catch those things without trying, and make the book flow less smoothly.

Would I suggest the book? Yes and No. I did take a few positive things from this book, and I would hate to take that away from the next reader. But I don't think everything in this book is correct, especially after discussing things I read in both books with some very close male friends (who have no reason to lie to me because sex is not an option, something Elena feels makes men lie to us in the first place). Not all men are the same, just like not all women are the same, and to lump them all up in one giant boat and post a sign on them really isn't fair. Just like it wouldn't be fair if they did it to us.

A few interesting bits:

"The woman's brain has a better chance of being stimulated by what we hear. Words and sounds can have a great impact on how the woman feels about a man. Aural as opposed to visual, but not exclusively of course."

"Love happens when a man captivates you with his charm and seduces you with his words and his actions without you realizing you are being seduced. That's what love has become for me: something bigger than our logical mind and beyond our logical control. ... Real love takes you over, and that's exactly why it doesn't happen every day."

"The problem is not the wound itself. The problem is when you become wounded you make a decision (consciously or unconsciously) not to open up your heart again. If you are guided solely by your brain and cut off from your heart, you lose the ability to be vulnerable and cherish your own feelings."

Definitely recommending to my friends!

What an incredibly insightful book. It was recommended to me by a friend and I couldn't put it down! There is a goldmine of information in there - I'm definitely sharing this one with al my girlfriends. I cringed and laughed at the familiarity of some of the content and learnt some hard lessons in the process... Anyone who's struggling in the dating game needs this book in their corner.

Comprehensive but has MSFT "blinders"

These books are well written and comprehensive. Most of the explanations are clear, reasonably concise, and fairly complete, and the books teach a great deal by prose, example, and practice. They are, by far, the best resources I have used yet.

But they still suffer from what I call "Microsoft blindness", the ingrained assumption that the reader (a) has worked extensively in the Microsoft space and (b) has never worked anywhere else. There's a Microsoft Mindset that the writers assume the readers have, and if you happen to be experienced in non-Microsoft technologies, it's almost like reading in a foreign language. If you speak the language well but not fluently, you can translate it, but you struggle to "think" in Microsoft -- or, at least, I do, having long non-Microsoft experience before entering the Microsoft world.

These books could be improved substantially if the writers kept in mind that some readers come from other environments, even if they just did it in sidebars with a signpost here and there, for the things that are quite reasonably obvious to Microsoft devotees that aren't obvious at all to those coming from the outside. One example of many is ongoing references to the .Net development framework. If you haven't developed code for Windows, which is quite possible for an incoming system administrator, many of the .Net references will make little sense, while to a .Net developer they are obvious and intrinsic to the environment.

Microsoft has simultaneously gotten better about playing well with other technologies while making their own more and more comprehensive. Their authors and editors should keep that in mind for future editions.

Preps for half the material.

These books are touted as comprehensive training kits to achieve certification, however; the material in the books only contain about 60% of what is actually needed.

I would not recommend these books to anyone serious about passing the examines. These should be considered reference and not prep.

I would have dropped it to one star as it's so misleading, but there are some valuable bits of info here.

I've read a few pages of all the books from this set. I've found the information very useful. The exercises at the end of each section help to reinforce the learning of the concepts covered throughout the chapters. Even if the step by steps directions do not always give the expected results, but as a network administrator or future network adminstrator you should be comfortable to figure out the problems and make educated guess as how to accomplish certain tasks based on the understanding of the concepts behind "click here and click there". Overall it is a good set of books to learn windows server 2008 r2.

Meddling gods or true love?

There's an expression that goes what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. But Randy is only there to do a job, so that doesn't really apply to him. He has no intentions on meeting anyone or doing anything he'll live to regret. Of course, a little gambling doesn't hurt, right? It is Las Vegas. So he goes to the casino of the hotel he's staying at. While standing near the craps table, he spots a gorgeous stranger on the other side, and when their eyes meet, sparks fly...

Randy can't believe it when the stranger beckons to him to join him. Who me? Yeah him. So he joins the good-looking man, and stands by his side as he proceeds to play, winning a lot of money in the process. Randy's grumbling stomach betrays other needs so the man suggests they get some food. Together, of course. But then he makes his first mistake, offering Randy an orange chip, one worth $1000. Randy doesn't want it, especially from someone he doesn't even know but doesn't know how to say so, especially after Garrett introduces himself and pours on the charm--what's a guy to do?

Garrett proceeds to show Randy a hell of a time over the next couple of very intense days they spend together, neither one aware that they are being observed by the god of Love himself. The two men are very attracted to one another. Could this be love? Neither one's willing to admit it, but the thought's sure there. But there are also issues between them. Randy doesn't like the way Garrett throws his money around, like it should make a difference. Maybe it's what Garrett's used to, but not him. Instead of being the great equalizer, could this end up being the great separator, the dividing factor?

Can they break down the barriers between them and get down to what really matters--love? First, they have to learn to communicate properly.

Priceless is the first book in M.A. Church's The Gods series. Why the gods, you ask? It's about men, not gods. Well, you see, there's this cute little fellow known as Cupid that's involved, but you'll see more of him later. Just know he's there, and he's got a finger in everything that happens. Or so he'd like to believe. And he's a very important player in the scheme of things.

Priceless is a romantic tale of strangers who meet and fall in love with just one glance. Instant chemistry. But is it love or lust? That's the crux of the matter. Being attracted to someone by just one look is common, but so is finding out it was just a physical thing. Everyone puts their best foot forward in making first impressions. It's the aftermath that counts.

Church gives us the glamor and glitz of Vegas, but then it all boils down to the two men and who they really are, and what each wants from the other. Her book is sweet, romantic, heated ,and sensual, and a great read. I liked both men: the earthy, shy and sweet Randy, as well as the controlling yet not as secure as he'd like you to believe Garrett. I'm a sucker for HEA's.

As I said, this is the first in the series, with Perfect coming out soon. The books don't need to be read in order. But it also puts things more in perspective if you do. I've actually already read Perfect, just not written the review. Yet. I'm really looking forward to the third book in the series, Pure.

This is a great love story. Two men who seem to have nothing in common finding each other in the most unlikely way. It's also a great set-up for the god series. Once you've read this one you'll have to read Perfect. And the only bad thing I have to say is that I HATE having to wait for Pure.

Priceless was a quick and enjoyable read. Because this is a novella and it’s set in Vegas, I gave the speed with which Randy and Garrett’s relationship developed far more leeway than I would have in a full-length novel. That their attraction was boosted by Cupid’s influence made the insta-love situation even more acceptable – he is the god of love after all. That said, watching Garrett tie himself up in knots about Randy was very entertaining. I liked that Randy wanted nothing to do with Garrett’s money, probably as much as Garrett liked it. It was a novel situation for Garrett and I enjoyed watching him get to be himself around Randy. As for Randy, it seemed to me like he was in serious need of the chance to let go and enjoy himself with Garrett. Without question, the sex between the two men was scorching and seemed to deepen the connection they felt. And with an entire weekend in Vegas, there was a LOT of connection deepening going on.

Not surprisingly, a combination of fear, self-doubt, and oversleeping led to Randy leaving Vegas without saying goodbye. As hot as the weekend of sex was, this is when the story really gets interesting because Garrett has to rally the troops – i.e., the friends who are going to give him a hard time while they help him track down Randy. Fortunately Garrett has friends in important places and he is able to find out who Randy is almost immediately and begin wooing him. The courtship was so freaking sweet, especially with it culminating on Valentine’s Day. Of course, Cupid’s revelation to Psyche at the end of the novella added an unexpected twist to the story and has me looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Perfect, because I cannot wait to find out what Ms. Church has in store for Jeff.

Ian Myles Slater on: Mainly For Serious Students

As stated by an earlier reviewer, this translation of "The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali," from Dover Publications, is NOT the work described in the Amazon "Editorial Reviews," but a classic translation-with-traditional-commentaries by an Indologist, James Haughton Woods (1864-1935). If you are looking for an easy "guide to Oriental Mysticism," or even religious edification, you probably won't be interested in this translation.

It has been at least twenty-five-plus years since I read it, and I still remember it as a long slog -- and I had been looking for something with "more meat on it." Contrary to my usual practice, I'm not even trying to re-read the whole book, or a substantial part of it, before reviewing it; this review is mostly an advisory for people thinking of buying it, sight-unseen.

Even if you don't think such heavy reading is for you, it is a good place to go to check other, more reader-friendly translations of either Patanjali's brief text or the commentarial tradition; and if you have ever compared translations, you may already want to account for the differences between many of them. Woods' own commentary may be helpful for such questions.

If you are interested in it just for this purpose, there is a pdf version from Google, also available from the Library of Congress's archive.com website. Since Dover's Kindle version does not preserve the original page numbering, the pdf is also invaluable for serious scholarship. It is not nearly as readable, however. Woods' various indexes give section and line numbers, instead of page numbers, so the Dover edition's version of these can be used. Don't look for it using the Dover title; it originally appeared as "The Yoga-System of Patanjali, Or The Ancient Hindu Doctrine of Concentration of Mind," as Volume 17 in the Harvard Oriental Series.

The massive work (over 400 pages) was apparently completed in 1914, following a period of study by Woods in India; bibliographic sources indicate that it was published that year. For some reason, Dover Publications ascribes that edition to 1927, although the pdf confirms the 1914 date. (Has it been confused with another volume in the Harvard Oriental Series, some of which were delayed by the First World War?)

This is, apparently, the only edition of Woods' "Yoga-System" available on Kindle; other editions, listed as his translation, all appear to be the works of others (mainly, I think, Charles Johnston). This appears to be yet another deeply-embedded mistake in the Kindle catalogue, rather than an intentional deception, although I wanted the Woods translation, and found the mix-up very annoying.*

Prospective readers should be advised that the approach taken by Woods is anything but popular. To quote a (somewhat self-congratulatory) Harvard Oriental Series catalogue of 1920, "When one considers the floods of pseudo-scientific writing with which the propagandists of various Indian "isms" in America have deluged us, one is the better prepared to appreciate the self-restraint of Dr. Woods in keeping all that pertains to miracle-mongering and sensationalism in the background, and in devoting himself to the exposition of the spiritual and intellectual aspects of Yoga. His work 'continues the tradition of austere scholarship' which has, from the beginning, characterized the Harvard Oriental Series."

The basic contents are the very brief sutra ('thread') attributed to Patanjali (who may or may not have been the grammarian of the same name), and the oldest commentary, Yoga-bhashya, attributed to Veda-Vyasa, together with its own Explanation, the Tattva-vaicaradi of Vachaspati-Misra. Naturally, Woods added his own commentary, to explain the sutra, commentary, and explanation of the commentary.

This was not the first appearance of the three works together in English; According to Mircea Eliade's even more massive "Yoga: Immortality and Freedom" (English translation, 1958, revised 1969) Rama Prasada's "Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, with the Commentary of Vyasa and the Gloss of Vachapatimisra" had appeared in print in 1910, and had its third edition in 1924.

Eliade, who also had studied in India (with the great historian of Indian philosophy, Surendranath Dasgupta), and was at one point a traditional Yoga practitioner, does not cite either translation, except to point out where Woods differed from Dasgupta on the identity of Patanjali. (Well, at least as far as the excellent index reveals). Possibly Eliade would have mentioned any other disagreements with Woods, but he couldn't mention everything, even in 572 pages, and that is just my working assumption.

*[Note, June 3, 2016: I haven't take a look at this review in some time, and now note that I failed to mention (or deleted) the peculiar fact that the Kindle file for this edition for some reason attributes the translation or editing to a certain Joseph A. Sullivan, who, so far as I have been able to figure out, had nothing to do with.....]

Worth the Effort to Read

For those who are interested in yoga and meditation, beyond as an exercise, this is the definitive book to read.

However, this is not a book for the novice. The reading can be difficult to grasp at times. I read the book three times and still use it as a reference. For those who are truly interested in mastering meditation this is the book --- after a good foundation and general understanding of the practice.

Personally, I feel that it helps to be somewhat familiar with Hinduism and some of the practices. I have been practicing meditation for quite a few years and found this book helpful. This is definitely not the first book to read if you are looking for an introduction to meditation or the Sutras.

Kindle edition doesn't give good transliterations of the Sanskrit

This translation by Woods is technical and not particularly easy however the Kindle edition has additional problems. The special characters in the Sanskrit words do not translate. They can't be reproduced by Kindle. This is a serious defect. It is very difficult to discern what the actual word in Sanskrit is and given the multiplicity of possibilities of possible translations it is very hard to follow the text. As the text is technical the Sanskrit is vital for an understanding of the work and this problem presents a serious difficulty in understanding the concepts. I wouldn't recommend it.

Wonderful Book!

This is a wonderful book! The story of the author's childhood, various escapades growing up, boy-mischief, becoming an adult and beyond. Staunch Catholic parents, breaking away, respecting family, aging, death, it's all here and told in an engaging writing style. I flat-out LOVED this book, and am now buying copies to give as gifts. I can't imagine anyone, male or female, NOT enjoying this memoir.

A touching story of growing up. This is my second time reading it - reminds me of how life is too short and not to take family and friends for granted, our time with them can be so short. Highly recommend this book - John Grogan is one of my favorite writers (Marey and Me)

A Jewel of a Book, With Many Facets

This brilliant historical novel tells a fascinating story, in beautiful language, with much wisdom. The novel is formed as an autobiography of the Emperor Hadrian, who ruled Rome from 117CE to 138; he was one of the "Five Good Emperors" who helped bring Roman civilization to its highest point. Hadrian was complicated. Politically, he was a good emperor from a Roman point of view, but other nations (like the Jews) saw him very differently. Personally, he was disciplined and intelligent, but fell passionately in love with a young boy, and could be cruel. The book, framed as a letter to Marcus Aurelius, who succeeded him twenty years after his death, takes Hadrian from his boyhood in Spain to his deathbed in Italy at 62.

The novel is beautifully written, in prose that captures the cadences of classical Roman writing. It is studded with perceptions and insights, as such a memoir would have been; I found myself underlining points as if it were an original text. The story is compelling -- how does it feel to be ruler of the world, and then to lose that which you hold most dear -- and the characters are fully developed. The novel took many years to write, and was based on exhaustive research -- Ms. Yourcenar, in an afterward, discusses what was known and what she made up, but it hangs together as a work of art. A great book, and a great pleasure to read.

A Memoir From the Man Who Rules the World

This book from Margaret Yourcenar, and translated into English by her and her lover Grace Frick, purports to be the memoirs of the Roman emperor Hadrian. He writes in the form of a letter reminiscing to his adopted grandson and future successor, Marcus Aurelius. Hadrian knows he is on the precipice of death, suffering from a form of cardiac hydropsy, and desires to recount his life.

Over the next three hundred pages, Hadrian describes his origins in a sleepy Spanish town. His grandfather divines that he will one day be ruler of the world and shortly thereafter he is the first of those closely connected to Hadrian to die, found dead on his farm and torn by birds of prey. Hadrian is eventually called by his distant uncle Trajan, the current emperor, to serve as a military commander in Dacia. The relationship between the two men is strained, but Hadrian performs well and retains his position. Trajan's ambition, however, leads him to folly and he decides to invade the Parthian Empire. Isolated in Mesopotamia, Trajan's health breaks down and eventually he dies, leaving Hadrian as his successor under suspicious circumstances.

Hadrian immediately withdraws from the newly won territories and makes peace with his foreign enemies, while also purging a few rivals from within the empire. Over the course of the next few decades, Hadrian brings about a level of peace and financial prosperity the empire had never previously encountered. Content to recognize men possess certain differences in attitude that cannot be changed, Hadrian allows a wide variety of opinions and faiths to flourish throughout the empire. Towards the end of his reign, this period of happiness ends. His beloved, a young man named Antinous, drowns himself in the Nile in an esoteric attempt to prolong the emperor's life. The Jews of Jerusalem and surrounding areas also rise up in revolt, and Hadrian is forced to brutally crush their rebellion. By the end, the children of Israel are exiled and their holy city is a pile of ruins.

Hadrian's health begins to break down and, after a brief flirtation with suicide, he decides to meet death with open eyes and an appreciation of what beauty the world can fleetingly offer. On the whole, the Memoirs of Hadrian is a fantastic novel that offers philosophy in a refreshing way. Rarely, if ever, have people had a leader with the intellectual repose the author gifts Hadrian with, but one would hope they at least realize once in power how puny their authority truly is. On a few occasions, the author diverges from the historical record (e.g. the permanent mystery of the circumstances of Antinous' death), but the appendix at the end of novel listing the author's resources shows she clearly did her research. Time passes quickly while reading this book, just as Hadrian would say for other aspects of our lives.

If you enjoy classical history

I don't even know where to begin when describing this book. If you enjoy classical history, and you are curious about Hadrian, it is unmatched. The book is written in a style that is analogous to those used by Roman philosophers and historians of the period. It, therefore, seems like you are reading a real first person account of Hadrian's life. It is also an extremely interesting meditation on what it means to be human. I terrific book; one that I will read again.
