Florida: A Short History, by Michael Gannon

As if Ponce de Len, who happened on the peninsula in 1513, returned today to demand a quick reckoning ("Tell me what happened after I was there, but leave out the boring parts!"), Michael Gannon recounts the longest recorded history of any state in the nation in twenty-seven brisk, fully illustrated chapters.

From indigenous tribes who lived along spring-fed streams to environmentalists who labor to "Save Our Rivers," from the first conquistadors whose broad black ships astonished the natives to the 123,000 refugees whose unexpected immigration stunned South Floridians in 1980, the story of the state is as rich and distinctive as the story of America.

And it’s older than most people think. As Gannon writes, "By the time the Pilgrims came ashore at Plymouth, St. Augustine was up for urban renewal. It was a town with fort, church, seminary, six-bed hospital, fish market, and about 120 shops and houses. Because La Florida stretched north from the Keys to Newfoundland and west to Texas, St. Augustine could claim to be the capital of much of what is now the United States."

Gannon tells his fast-marching saga in chronological fashion. Starting with the wilderness of the ancient earth, he fills the landscape with Indians, colonists, pioneers, entrepreneurs, politicians, and the panorama of Florida today--"the broad superhighways that wind past horse farms, retirement communities, international airports, launch pads, futuristic attractions, and come to rest, finally, amidst the gleaming towers of Oz-like cities." This revised edition concludes with a look into the twenty-first century, including "in-migration," restoration of the Everglades, education, the work force, and the infamous 2000 presidential election.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how informative and easy to follow the timeline of this book
By Amazon Customer
I have to admit, I do not do many reviews. However, I felt compelled to comment on this title. I was pleasantly surprised to see how informative and easy to follow the timeline of this book. By no means does Michael Gannon dig deep into various eras of Florida history. But he does give just the right amount of insight into Florida history during the Spanish occupation through to the Seminole Wars, statehood, Civil War, Industrial Age, and into near present days. There is more than sufficient tidbits of information to keep interest and spark my own research into specific eras of Florida. Consider this book as a terrific overview of Florida's history. This book should find its way into every elementary school.

To Empower People: From State to Civil Society, by Peter L. Berger, Richard John Neuhaus

In 1976, in the first edition of this book, Peter Berger and Richard John Neuhaus anticipated the major worldwide project of the 1990s: the renewal of civil society. They showed that such "mediating structures" as family, neighbourhood, church, and voluntary and civil associations are crucial institutions, whose weakening spells disaster. Now, with many of their ideas vindicated, the authors have returned to their original argument to assess what has succeeded, what went wrong and what remains to be done. Contributors include: Douglas J. Besharov, Stuart M. Butler, William A. Galston, David G. Green, Michael Horowitz, Michael S. Joyce, Leslie Lenkowsky, James P. Pinkerton, William A. Schambra and Robert L. Woodson.

Trading Time For Money
By Robert A. Carr III
"To Empower People" by Berger and Newhaus I found useful in my quest as a conservative to understand the basics of what it takes to slow and eventually turn back the ever growing government.

This book goes to the heart of the matter. Yes they say it is possible, then they show how we do it. We need to make it personal; we need to put in place alternatives to government handouts.

They then remind us that this takes not only a change of attitude on our part but a willingness to put in a lot of work and time.

The book is well reasoned and written. The arguements are sound. The assumption is however that we are willing to put in that time and effort as citizens and manage the process ourselves with an intimate local focus rather than just writing a check.

Do we have that focus and willingness? The book was done in 1995. Times and attitudes seem to be changing since then, there seems to be a vacuum looking to be filled with any workable solutions outside Big Government. Well time will tell if we are up to it.

Regards, Bob Carr

Amazon.com Review
It is always night in the city of Ember. But there is no moon, no stars. The only light during the regular twelve hours of "day" comes from floodlamps that cast a yellowish glow over the streets of the city. Beyond are the pitch-black Unknown Regions, which no one has ever explored because an understanding of fire and electricity has been lost, and with it the idea of a Moveable Light. "Besides," they tell each other, "there is nowhere but here" Among the many other things the people of Ember have forgotten is their past and a direction for their future. For 250 years they have lived pleasantly, because there has been plenty of everything in the vast storerooms. But now there are more and more empty shelves--and more and more times when the lights flicker and go out, leaving them in terrifying blackness for long minutes. What will happen when the generator finally fails?

Twelve-year-old Doon Harrow and Lina Mayfleet seem to be the only people who are worried. They have just been assigned their life jobs--Lina as a messenger, which leads her to knowledge of some unsettling secrets, and Doon as a Pipeworker, repairing the plumbing in the tunnels under the city where a river roars through the darkness. But when Lina finds a very old paper with enigmatic "Instructions for Egress," they use the advantages of their jobs to begin to puzzle out the frightening and dangerous way to the city of light of which Lina has dreamed. As they set out on their mission, the haunting setting and breathless action of this stunning first novel will have teens clamoring for a sequel. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

From Booklist
Gr. 5-7. Ember, a 241-year-old, ruined domed city surrounded by a dark unknown, was built to ensure that humans would continue to exist on Earth, and the instructions for getting out have been lost and forgotten. On Assignment Day, 12-year-olds leave school and receive their lifetime job assignments. Lina Mayfleet becomes a messenger, and her friend Doon Harrow ends up in the Pipeworks beneath the city, where the failing electric generator has been ineffectually patched together. Both Lina and Doon are convinced that their survival means finding a way out of the city, and after Lina discovers pieces of the instructions, she and Doon work together to interpret the fragmented document. Life in this postholocaust city is well limned--the frequent blackouts, the food shortage, the public panic, the search for answers, and the actions of the powerful, who are taking selfish advantage of the situation. Readers will relate to Lina and Doon's resourcefulness and courage in the face of ominous odds. Sally Estes

Review
USA Today
"DuPrau’s first foray into fiction creates a realistic post-apocalyptic world. Reminiscent of Robert O'Brien's Z for Zachariah, DuPrau’s book leaves Doon and Lina on the verge of the undiscovered country and readers wanting more."

Starred Review, Publishers Weekly
"Thanks to full-blooded characters every bit as compelling as the plot, Lina and Doon’s search parallels the universal adolescent quest for answers. An electric debut!"

Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews
"Well-paced, this contains a satisfying mystery, a breathtaking escape over rooftops in darkness, a harrowing journey into the unknown, and cryptic messages for readers to decipher. The likeable protagonists are not only courageous but also believably flawed by human pride. The cliffhanger ending will leave readers clamoring for the next installment."

Starred Review, Voice of Youth Advocates
"While Ember is colorless and dark, the book itself is rich with description. DuPrau uses the puzzle, suspenseful action, and lots of evil characters to entice readers into the story. They will find the teen characters believable and gutsy. Part mystery, part adventure story."

The Horn Book Magazine
"The device of a hidden letter, complete with missing words, is used with such disarming forthrightness that readers will be eagerly deciphering it right alongside Doon and Lina."

City of Heroes
By DrPat
The City of Ember is a rule-bound place, where all the lights go out at 9 each night, everyone rises early for breakfast, and careful recycling is a way of life. Lately, though, the lights have begun flickering. Supplies are shorter each year, and some foods are no longer available.

Until their 12th year, the children of the City of Ember go to school. But at the end of that year, they are assigned the jobs they will do for years after, perhaps to the end of their lives. Lina yearns to be a Messenger, running free in the streets, learning the secrets of the city. Doon wants desperately to be an electrician's assistant or a pipeworker, because he dreams of fixing the ancient, failing generators of the city.

When each receives the assignment the other wants, they switch jobs, and begin a conspiracy that will not end until they learn how to save the entire city. Along the way, they solve an ancient puzzle, defeat the greed and subterfuge of the Mayor and his minions, and discover a much wider world than either had ever dreamed existed.

When I read children's literature, I look for more than a tale well told. Juvenile science fiction is not hard to come by, especially today in the age of Harry Potter. But fiction that lauds heroism (particularly the kind of courage which every child will have an opportunity to demonstrate), extolls the value of friendship, and shows when adult precepts and rules are worthwhile, and how to tell when they are not - that is uncommon. (Those qualities form the foundation of the Harry Potter stories, too, and explain the widespread appeal of the boy wizard and his friends.)

The City of Ember has that same appeal. Doon and Lina are courageous; they do things children would do, yet also show judgement, persistence and intelligence. These are kids who love their parents, and still see that they must take extraordinary steps outside the regimented life they have led. In the end, they do save their city, and if they do not battle great evil, they do encounter and overcome the kind of petty nastiness that is far more common in the world.

On Kindle, the book loses none of its original charm, with the possible exception of the maps and notes. Where these extend across the page, they are difficult to enjoy, even in Zoom mode.

The book works best in tandem with its sequel, The People of Sparks: The Second Book of Ember (Books of Ember). Together, they are an interesting story - even for an adult. I recommend it highly for boys and girls who want something better than comic-book heroes and video-game battles, and for readers who are no longer children, but still yearn toward the hero we can each become.

The detail is amazing and it completely brought the book to life
By Amazon Customer
What a breathtaking book! The detail is amazing and it completely brought the book to life, the storyline is very creative and inventive. This book is about the adventurous, courageous, and shy Lina, who lives in a small, rubbish, and dirty town, that hasn't seen natural light since... ever. So, Lina is determined to find some sort of light, to help her city, that is run by a selfish mayor, who gets everything to himself. In fact, Lina discovers a small closet in the pipe works while visiting a friend on assignment day, inside that small closet is a lifetime supply of canned goods, that some people have never even had in their town. She finds out that her mayor secretly takes his "break" in that closet to have all the goods to himself, so she wonders... "What if I found out more" so Lina, without thinking twice, tries and finds out more. She searches all over the pipe works for more information, she finds a key, her new friend Doon, and some determination to find out what this key leads to. Is it the key to a new city? Will Lina and Doon find light?
Read this dramatic and climactic book to find out!

A lovely book that reminds me of Ella Enchanted, Walk Two Moons and Hatchet!
By Love of Reading 2017
I. The Beginning: Did It Hook Me?

It actually did. I was curious to see why the "Builders" would go to such extreme lengths to have a society live on the basis of a lie, hoping they would somehow make it to the world above. It seemed like a far-fetched idea at the beginning of the book, but as it continued I easily suspended belief.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

II. The Characters: Could I Relate to Them?

Absolutely. I absolutely loved Lina, Doon (can't figure out how his name is pronounced lol), her grandmother, and Poppy. I do feel the woman she ends up moving in with could've been fleshed out more (forgot her name), but overall the characters had "weight" to them.

This book, while for children, was a great read because the characters not only behaved as children, but took on adult responsibilities as Ember dictated. I loved seeing Lina as a responsible mother figure for her mother, but also child enough to buy the colored pencils.

Doon was such a lovable character. He honestly feels like the one person every child wants that believes their crazy/outlandish ideas and listens. I felt for him, related to his anger he felt and how he wanted to be taken seriously. I feel in so many ways I am like Doon and really loved his story.

Grandmother was an absolute joy, though her exit from the book did seem sudden and underdeveloped. I liked her madness; it seemed real and added a certain suspense to the novel.

Overall, this book is a very solid read.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

III. The Plot: Was It Well Paced?

Absolutely! I was frustrated because I didn't have much time to commit to this book initially, but I was finally able to sit down and get into it (on March 6, 2015) it finished it that day! This book has no lags, isn't necessarily action packed, but makes use of every sentence.

This book was refreshing and warm. I felt like the author wrote it with her heart, body and soul; if I had read this as a child, I am sure it would've been one of my favorites. I mean, I'm an adult and I love this book!

The alternative POV's are executed perfectly in this book. In some books, actually in many current YA books, can be tedious and gimmicky. The dual-narrative in this book is necessary to tell two different stories about two people who have the audacity to pay attention and hope for more.

This book is a new favorite of mine.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

IV. World Building: Did I "Get" It?

There were some plot holes, but I figure they will be answered in the second book. Overall, I understood the society of Ember and have a general idea of how it works. It would've been nice to get the reasoning for the jobs in Ember, along with the significance of kids starting work at age 12, but these weren't major issues of mine. I don't understand how Doon and Lina were able to see Ember from above, but the people of Ember couldn't see the sky far above them. Also, if they can drop a note into Ember, how is it rain or other things don't fall into the city?

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

V. The Ending: Did It Make Sense?

It did. This is the kind of book that makes you want to read the next one. I wanted to know more about Lina's caregiver, but the story line didn't go that way; I can't wait to see what happens in book two!

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

VI. Overall

This is a very solid read that not only left me smiling, but has me anxious to read the next book in the series!

I highly recommend!

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-After providing the background of the persecution of Jews and other people considered undesirable by Hitler and his followers from 1933 on, Altman describes the method used to isolate them. She explains how the ghettos were governed; the unwitting complicity of Jewish administrators in carrying out Nazi orders; and the struggle of the inhabitants to maintain their spirit, humanity, schools, and culture. The story is told with compassion, but errors in the introduction mar what would otherwise be a highly recommended book. In addition, there is an inadequate explanation of the conditions under which a new law had been passed combining the offices of chancellor and president in Germany in 1934. The law was not merely fortuitous for Hitler; it was planned by him. None of these errors are found in the second volume. Byers correctly describes the dismal economic conditions in Germany after World War I, the resentment at the government that surrendered, the continued militarism and nationalism, and the ethnic unrest that continued to fester there. Life in the concentration camps, liberation, and subsequent war-crimes trials are vividly described. This is a thorough and accurate book.-Marcia W. Posner, Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center of Nassau County, Glen Cove, NY

decent 3.7
By Vivace
The good:
- gives you concrete, real motivation for using graphDB
- decent discussion of modeling real world problems as graphs
- nice coverage of cypher
- nice coverage of neo4j

the bad:
- reads a bit like an advertisement for neo4j
- doesnt discuss much about pregel or other distributed graph systems.
- the last chapter is entitled 'predictive analytics' was a bit of a let down. The first half is just BFS, DFS and A* and the second half discusses `triadic closure' ...
- its a short book and a bit fluffy.

on the whole:
i was very excited to get this book, had it on preorder....its not the bombshell i was hoping for but it is a great step in the right direction.

Your grandfather's database?
By wiredweird
On the whole, I found this an adequate introduction. It goes over the basic notion of a graph database, built as a web of nuggets of information with explicit connections between them. The authors contrast this to the popular, table-oriented relational model, and describe cases where the graph approach offer better conceptual match to the real world, better performance, and many other advantages. Although this ties to specific products, it presents some examples in terms of a very non-SQL-like query language with some intriguing possibilities. It comes across more as a conceptual introduction than a detailed manual for the practitioner, but that's OK.

Not surprisingly, it skips over cases where relational's implicit, regular parallelism offers huge possibility for acceleration compared to the random access patterns of graph databases, but one could concoct cases for advantage in either direction. Also, despite the effort in computing a relational "join", there's great freedom in being able to create arbitrary new relationships between data elements - graph DBs show no straightforward way to step off the trails defined by the graph's existing edges. To boldly go through the data where no one has gone before seems not to be part of the paradigm.

My problem lies in presenting graph databases as shiny and new, the next great thing after relational. They're also shiny and old, the last great thing before relational. Network-based CODASYL databases held sway through the 1970s and early 1980s, before the relational model swept the industry in a seismic shift. For some reason, the authors omit all mention of this fact. The index doesn't even list the word CODASYL. Whether intentionally or not, the authors come across as Santayana's "those who cannot remember the past." In particular, they choose not to discuss database optimizations based on the physical, on-disk relationships between data items - something explicit in at least one CODASYL database I used back in the day, and that offered very worthwhile speedups.

This presents good conceptual foundation for graph databases. It's not the how-to for a serious programmer, though, and completely disregards decades of practice and hard-won experience.

New approach to data modelling explained in detail
By Krzysztof Ropiak
This book significantly help in understanding what graph databases are and how to use them properly. The authors introduce basic ideas behind graph databases. They write about why the need for such databases emerged, why there's a need for having database engine in which relationships are first class citizens.

I believe that most important chapter of this book is the one that explains data modeling with graphs. The way you need to think when using graph db is totally different that in other types of db. The authors based their teachings on a set of examples, with each being discussed in detail. Various use-cases are shown, and you'll be surprised how efficient data model can be, when used properly.

You will be also able to learn basics of Cypher, which is a language that is used for querying a graph database. It's not really comprehensive introduction, so therefore it cannot be used as a reference. The book shows examples for querying Neo4j, which is probably the most popular graph database implementation. I don't think that you will be very comfortable at using Neo4j immediately after reading this book. It rather intends to make you familiar with fundamental concepts of graph databases and showing how it differs from still more popular solutions like RDBMS.

Also, some additional topics were covered, like: overview of using graph database in agile (also tdd-based) manner, introduction to Neo4j internals (different available APIs or ways of running it) or overview of other NoSQL storage.

I really liked reading it and the book made me more interested in graph-dbs as it provided solid arguments for using it in various applications. On the other hand, after reading it, I still think there's a lot for me to learn (from other resources) before I become comfortable with Neo4j. I would recommend this book to all developers, who are new to concepts of graph databases and who wants to become familiar with its strong points, before they try start using concrete graph database solutions like Neo4j.

Compact Heat Exchangers: Selection, Design and Operation, by J.E. Hesselgreaves

This book presents the ideas and industrial concepts in compact heat exchanger technology that have been developed in the last 10 years or so. Historically, the development and application of compact heat exchangers and their surfaces has taken place in a piecemeal fashion in a number of rather unrelated areas, principally those of the automotive and prime mover, aerospace, cryogenic and refrigeration sectors. Much detailed technology, familiar in one sector, progressed only slowly over the boundary into another sector. This compartmentalisation was a feature both of the user industries themselves, and also of the supplier, or manufacturing industries. These barriers are now breaking down, with valuable cross-fertilisation taking place.

One of the industrial sectors that is waking up to the challenges of compact heat exchangers is that broadly defined as the process sector. If there is a bias in the book, it is towards this sector. Here, in many cases, the technical challenges are severe, since high pressures and temperatures are often involved, and working fluids can be corrosive, reactive or toxic. The opportunities, however, are correspondingly high, since compacts can offer a combination of lower capital or installed cost, lower temperature differences (and hence running costs), and lower inventory. In some cases they give the opportunity for a radical re-think of the process design, by the introduction of process intensification (PI) concepts such as combining process elements in one unit. An example of this is reaction and heat exchange, which offers, among other advantages, significantly lower by-product production.

To stimulate future research, the author includes coverage of hitherto neglected approaches, such as that of the Second Law (of Thermodynamics), pioneered by Bejan and co- workers. The justification for this is that there is increasing interest in life-cycle and sustainable approaches to industrial activity as a whole, often involving exergy (Second Law) analysis. Heat exchangers, being fundamental components of energy and process systems, are both savers and spenders of exergy, according to interpretation.

This technology module contains a brief introductory description to the exchanger type above, followed by information on construction, construction materials, operating limits
and principal applications. Where appropriate, a comparison is made with conventional
shell and tube heat exchangers to emphasise size and weight reductions that can be
achieved by using compact heat exchangers.
The Module 3 series present further information applicable to all technologies, such as
general advantages and limitations of compact exchanger designs, common applications,
fouling and how to minimise it, energy efficiency. heat transfer enhancement, exchanger
selection, specification and operation, process intensification and software programmes.

Historical Syntax in Cross-Linguistic Perspective (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics), by Alice C. Harris, Lyle Campbell

In this important new work, Alice Harris and Lyle Campbell set out to establish a general framework for the investigation of syntactic change. Using a cross-linguistic approach, they reveal shared properties of changes across languages, determine what mechanisms lie behind them, and how they correlate to the overall explanation of syntactic change. They draw on data drawn from a wide variety of languages, in particluar those from the Indo-European, Finno-Ugric, Kartvelian, and North East Caucasian families.

Review
"A book of this magnitude and comprehensiveness on a topic so neglected in recent linguistics has long been wanting. Harris and Campbell have made an admirable attempt to provide a balanced synthesis of over one hundred years of research on diachronic syntax...while simultaneously attempting to provide some unity to this dipersed field. Thus, they provide a unified methodology and a limited set of mechanisms of change.... ...this book is essentially the only one of its kind; this by itself is a virtue." Paul Manning, Anthropological Linguistics
