By Nayyirah Waheed
zimbabwe by tapiwa mugabe is a wide and wondrous tapestry. sweeping and luxurious in its ability to speak multiple languages at once. to speak multiple lives at once. to be multiple continents at once. mugabe writes from the belly of the sky. with longing accuracy and crushing tenderness. his voice. fresh. sweltering. zimbabwe is phenom. and new heart. and the world is so ready for mugabes' fresh hands.

I found a few poems I loved here
By Sunlyonis
I am a poet. I always judge a poetry book based on how it has changed me... its style... if I find a new favorite poem, or lines I want to share. I have a few poems from this book that I love. I jotted down a few lines that really spoke to me. I plan to write a review on my blog in the near future in support of this poet. I don't know Mugabe, but I am grateful for this book. I think other readers, writers and poets would appreciate this work.

That was the best nosey decision ever because I love her and Ward ...
By Xian Xian
Mugabe is a poet that seemed have to come out of nowhere for me, along with Nayyirah Waheed and Yrsa Daley-Ward, but I discovered salt. because I think somebody else was reading it on Goodreads and me being nosey, of course I checked it out, despite not knowing that person at all. That was the best nosey decision ever because I love her and Ward too. Then Zimbabwe came around with them and the first thing I saw was the beautiful painting on the cover. And I wondered, "What are these poems like?" At that time I didn't know Mugabe had a Tumblr blog. But when I did find it, I read a few poems here and there and then I just started listening to the music from the wonderful playlist on there and doing homework. This has nothing to do with the poetry but this is how I discover most books I love. Out of thin air, or the spaces of the internet. Off topic sentence: My mother got a kindle for Christmas and when this ReadColor free kindle book event came around, I went to her kindle and downloaded all four books onto it. She's not really into poetry, but I hope she likes these. She's the reason why I read books in the first place.

But like I've said hundreds of time on this blog, I don't have much to say when it comes to poetry. Even as Notes on the Shore, after I got rid of the cheesy title Words, Notes, and Fiction, this blogger still has a hard time talking about poetry. But I do highly recommend it. Zimbabwe is the song of love and family and a constant, tear filled nostalgia for the past or maybe the want for a better one. And then the future, we hope that it's better than the past, for our children and their children too. I'm not sure what I'm talking about here. Love yourself more than you love anyone else, because usually that love is taken advantage of. But of course, you must love your family members the same way you love yourself. Mugabe's poetry is filled with loved and a passion that seems so rare in poetry, the type that actually really touches you and understands you, in such few words. Because honestly, only one metaphors and two stanzas is all you need to reach someone.

Review
'What makes Blomfeld's film so radical is the clarity and force with which it proves that science fiction can tell us as much about the world we live in as any social documentary. ' Telegraph 'A towering achievement.' The Times 'The digital effects are so great they make it look like a documentary from hell.' Guardian

From the Back Cover

In 2009 Weta Workshop created a world so uncannily realistic that the special effects (in addition to an undeniably poignant plot) helped a low-budget film with an unknown cast become a blockbuster hit. Movie-goes, bloggers, and critics could not stop talking about Neill Blomkamp's first feature film, District 9, the newest alien movie that has raised the bar for science fiction thrillers in the new century.

Weta Workshop's artists created the special make-up effects, physical characteristics, alien weaponry, props, armor, custom vehicles and spaceships that were all stylized in a foreign yet familiar graphic language that defined the film's distinctive alien aesthetic. This book illuminates the creative design process, detailing two years of interaction between Weta's artists and director Neill Blomkamp in the form of hundreds of images of concept art from both the designers and director, stunning photographs of the props and sculptures, and insightful remarks from the artists themselves. Many of the images included in this book have never been seen before, including work cut or barely glimpsed in the finished film. Written by designer Daniel Falconer with a foreword by Neill Blomkamp and introduction by Richard Taylor (multi Academy Award winning special effects and make-up artist and head of Weta), The Art of District 9 offers an unrivalled, front row glimpse into the creative minds and hands that shaped this amazing film.

About the Author

Daniel Falconer has been a designer at Weta Workshop for more than a decade, producing conceptual art as part of the design team on many of the company's high profile projects, including The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the short-lived Halo movie adaptation. Daniel wrote and collated Weta's first two books, The World of Kong (Simon & Schuster, 2005) and The Crafting of Narnia (HarperOne, 2008), art books that showcased the illustrative work of the entire design departments behind on King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia movies, and has provided descriptive copy for movie-based toys and collectibles including The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. He lives in Wellington with his wife Catherine and two daughters, reveling in his dream career of playing in imaginary worlds every day.

It has more than what you saw in the film
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo294YS8BLHEIOZ]]Weta Workshop is a brand that's synonymous with quality creative work. The Art of District 9 is another testament to the amazing work they do, on top of what they have already done - Avatar, Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia.

The Art of District 9 is a 160-page hardcover. This book actually cost a few dollars less than typical art books of this size. This is a fantastic bargain.

The book is filled with concept art. Most of the things you see are in their various stages of development, from the idea to the final designs. There are lots of iterations for character designs, the aliens, props, weapons, the mothership and many other stuff. All the visuals in the book are in high resolution with great detail.

What you see in the film is actually a small part of what's presented in the book. You can see a discarded concepts like crazy Organ Retriever which can harvest organs at the press of a button (I suppose), and then there's the variation of the exo suit which was designed to the stage where a life-size model was created and then dropped - I can't even begin to imagine how it feels like to have work at that stage of completion thrown out. And there are a few impressive mothership designs which weren't used as well.

Other than the illustrated art, there are also lots of pictures on the sculpts created. What impresses me are the weapon designs. They look really good, and they are printed really big, and there are lots of them.

Lead conceptual designer Greg Broadmore, creature designer David Meng, Neill Blomkamp and other artists provide good insight into the conceptualization process with their commentary.

This is one of the better art books for 2010.

Highly recommended.

(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I might have peed a little
By SixFootEwok
I'll keep this short since there are 15 other 5 star reviews, but this is a model for what all other "art of" books should be. Complete design evolution of characters and weapons, along with photos of final Weta props. The book even shows a lot of the graphic design: everything from the alien language to the human corporations. So many awesome. Buy! Buy buy buy!

WOW!!! All "art of" books should be this good.
By iXlad66
A must have if you loved the production design of the film or if you are a sci-fi/fantasy artist looking for inspiration.
Unbelievable photos and reproductions of District 9's concept art.
Destined to be a highly sought-after collectible book.
Get it while you can!
Glad I ordered two copies.

The Absolute Wonder of Beauty and Grace
By Amazon Customer
Beautiful cover, reference and a wonderful overall version of the classic King James. This is now my 3rd NKJV bible I have purchased and it was so worth the price. I love the New King James Version because it captures what we all loved of the Old King Jimmy without losing the beauty and majesty of the classic. The words and phrases of our beautiful holy scriptures have been watered down over the years with all these new versions coming out, most especially this New International Version which to me just seems to lessen the value of the Word of God. I love this NKJV because it is easy to read and too understand. The commentaries and history that shows up all through the NKJV only help you truly appreciate this work of art.
This NKJV is an absolute for anyone who has ever loved the beauty and richness of the Old King James and makes this NKJV hard to put down.

Amazing
By Sierra419
This is an amazing bible. There are tons of maps, notes/commentaries on almost every single scripture, timelines, charts, graphs, historical set pieces, and information on the technology of that age. There is an introduction to every book telling about the author, period, an outline of the book, and how that book pertains to Christ. There are also star shapes in the books indicating biblical prophecy and, specifically, whether the prophecy is being foretold or fulfilled. This bible also contains tons (15,000 to be exact) of cross referenced scripture and many different translations of different words giving you deeper meaning of the scripture. Italisized words let you know that those specific words were added in the translation from Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek to English. Most of the words are "the", "was", "to", "there", etc. Nothing major, but a nice feature. Theres lots of good stuff here.

The bible is top quality from cover to cover and inside out. The type face is a nice black without being too much contrast with the white page. The color is a pleasure to look at and is a comfortable size with a light blue background where the notes and cross references are making the page very soft on the eyes. The layout is very easy to follow and is very user friendly. The scripture and notes are in two different type faces and points making them both flow very well together and seperately. Theres also a very nice history of the KJV and NKJV of the bible in the introduction as well as other histories and facts on different things in the introduction.

The outside of the bible is your typical bonded leather. However, I think this is a better quality than most, but thats just me. The bronze version isnt as bronze as the picture suggests. Its actually more dulled/ faded looking than the picture. Nonetheless, I still love the look of the bronze and how it feels in my hands. The outside of the pages are lined with a shiny gold tint making it look very nice with the bronze cover (I believe all the bonded leather versions are gold outlined, white outlined for the hard covers, and silver for the fake leather/ designer style versions). There are no markings on the front cover or rear cover indicating its a bible, even though its obvious thats what it is, but the front and rear covers are just plain bonded leather. The spine of the bible has "NKJV Holy Bible" written in gold inlay lettering and I beleive it also has "Nelson" (the publisher) written on the spine near the bottom as well, not positive on this though. The bible weighs between 4-5 pounds and is a bigger sized bible thats not too thick.

Overall, this is a great product with TONS of great study notes, maps, charts, commentaries, information on each book and the period it takes place in. People who have a hard time reading regular sized bible font (8pt.) may have difficulty reading this bible. However, there is a large print version. My only gripe with this bible is page quality. To cut down on thickness and weight the publisher made the pages very thin. You can see whatevers on the next page before actually turning the page. Although its not nearly as bad as those cheap small bibles churchs give out for free, its still a small nuisance. The pages also make me feel like I may accidently rip them or mangle them when flipping back and fourth between NT and OT cross referenced scripture, but this has yet to happen and is just my personal opinion. All in all I HIGHLY recommend this bible to anyone looking for extended knowlege and/or a better understanding on God's holy Word.

I would give this 4.5/ 5 stars due to the page thinness. However, the minor drawback of this near perfect bible should not sway your mind in the least if you still undecided. In my personal opinion I think this is the best study bible available.

Nice Bible, But Don't Love the Cover Material
By Ham
Ok, breaking things down into three categories.

Translation – Four Stars
The New King James version is an update of the older King James Version. The new update removes antiquated language (thee, thou, etc.) and improves grammar. However it still sounds very familiar to those familiar with the KJV. Most scholars tend to agree that overall it is an accurate translation, but that the underlying text the Textus Recepetus may not be the best. The differences between more widely accepted texts are generally minor and have no real impact on significant theological issues, but it’s worth mentioning.

Study Notes – Four Stars
Obviously I haven’t read each note, but in general they seem pretty good sort of moderate to conservative evangelical. They did seem to avoid some more controversial issues which seem to be why you might want to reference study notes. There are additional helps like word studies, short articles, charts, maps and a nice concordance. Overall these study notes should be a help to most people.

Physical Construction – Three Stars
The description does clearly states that this is imitation leather, but I was expecting something just a little nicer. I assumed this meant the material used in other Bibles called Duo-Tone. However, this is more like a thin embossed plastic glued to cardboard. It looks and feels cheap. In all honesty I was so disappointed I considered returning it, but the reality is this is nice enough for just a little over forty bucks. The remaining construction seems pretty nice and the general look and layout of the pages is very usable. The paper is of nice quality and not too thin as Bible paper sometimes is.

Overall 3.67 Stars (rounded up to four)
This is a good Study Bible and should serve you well as an additional study aid. If you’re looking for a nice Bible sort of an heirloom type item I would definitely consider something else due to the cover material. Also, you might save a little money and get the hardback since this isn’t really that much nicer.

The Ways of the West, by Kelly Dawson

Orphaned by an attack on her family’s wagon train, Jessica finds herself stranded a thousand miles from Boston, the only home she has ever known. Only one man—a rough, dusty cowboy named Johnny—stands between her and the perils of the West, and he quickly makes it clear that he is ready to do whatever needs to be done to keep Jessica safe… whether she likes it or not.

When the unlikely pair stumble upon a cattle drive and they are offered employment, Johnny doesn’t hesitate to accept. But after Jessica loudly expresses her disdain for his plan and for cowboys in general, Johnny decides it is time for drastic action. After a hard, embarrassing spanking followed by a tearful apology to the trail boss, Jessica is left with both a sore backside and a strange yet undeniably powerful need to be held close and comforted by her handsome protector.

With Johnny by her side—and claiming an ever bigger place in her heart with each passing day—Jessica begins to adjust to life on the trail. But a cattle drive is a dangerous place for anyone, let alone a city girl with a penchant for disobedience. If he ever wants the chance to make Jessica his wife, Johnny knows he’s going to have to take her firmly in hand before she gets herself hurt or killed. Even if it means a painful, humiliating bare-bottom strapping she’ll never forget, one way or another he’ll teach her the ways of the west.

Publisher’s Note: The Ways of the West is an erotic romance novel that contains sexual scenes and spankings, including domestic discipline in a historical setting. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

Review
"This is an enjoyable read that should delight even those who are not as crazy about westerns and cowboys as me.... This story had some twists and turns and is ultimately a very sweet and touching love story. The main characters are well developed and interesting. The dialog is believable, the secondary characters interesting." - Leigh Smith, Spanking Romance Reviews

Raw Hide
By Devlin O'Neill
I really liked this book. The story reminded me of the thousands of western TV shows I watched as a boy. Even back then I was on the lookout for spanking scenes in shows like Wagon Train, Have Gun Will Travel, and Rawhide. Sometimes those writers even obliged me, if not with a full on spanking, at least with a one-smacker or a threat.

But Kelly Dawson doesn’t need to hold back. Her heroine, a proper Bostonian young lady suddenly orphaned in the western wilderness, seldom sits altogether comfortably, owing to the hard hand of her brand new cowboy boyfriend. He feels possessive toward her, since the two were the only survivors of an Indian raid on their wagon train, and, frankly, the young lady doesn’t always know how to keep out of trouble. They hire on as drovers with a herd on the Sedalia Trail, which leads to even more complications.

Still, between her pluck and his frontier smarts, the two manage to make it through, and they even get married before having sex, which Dawson very nicely and graphically describes. Since they are hitched, this very much is in keeping with the 1950s western ideal, though the actual depictions of intercouree and bare bottom spanking really aren’t what one would see on 50s TV. Which made the story even more enjoyable.

It is too easy to fall into tired clichs
By Jonmontanavega
Okay, I'm not much of a western reading hombre. It is too easy to fall into tired clichs. If they have to be written - and they must be hugely popular because they keep coming out - then the details should be correct. From my years living in the west and enjoying rodeo, the horse and cattle drive references are exact. Which fits what I found on the author's page - she rides.

The romance is sweet, the spankings earnest and entirely earned by our heroine. So often these books are either a series of connected spankings with no story or the reasons for spanking are contrived. Neither is a problem here. Plus, our heroine Jessica is definitely not "TSTL" or too stupid to live. This Boston lady rides drag (look it up cowboy romance fans) without complaint. What's not to like?

My disclaimer: I bought the book, I wasn't asked to review it, but I have congratulated the author on an earlier book, a contemporary set in NZ with a nice difference.

Kelly Dawson Is In A Class Of Her Own!
By Nichols Reviews
In the first few pages Dawson had me in tears. My heart ached for Jessica when she became orphaned and without a plan. Stranded in the unknown territory that is the West she isn't sure what she'll do. Johnny knew the moment he placed eyes on Dawson that she would be his bride someday. He'll stop at nothing to protect her and keep her safe.

I love Dawson's writing style because she focuses more on the story line than the spankings and sex. While there are some spankings and sex, it is mostly about Jessica's loss and her way towards rebuilding her future. I have grown to like the easy flow of Dawson's stories. As you read them you can feel the natural rhythm of her writing style.

Seeing Jessica's growth from bratty orphan to hard working cattle woman, I became obsessed and couldn't put this down. With Johnny's firm hand and Jessica's stubbornness to change her attitude about the hand she was dealt, it proved to be a fantastic read.

Confess CHAPTER ONE Auburn
I squirm in my chair as soon as he tells me his hourly rate. There’s no way I can afford this with my income.

“Do you work on a sliding-scale basis?” I ask him.

The wrinkles around his mouth become more prominent as he attempts to keep from frowning. He folds his arms over the mahogany desk and clasps his hands together, pressing the pads of his thumbs against one other.

“Auburn, what you’re asking me to do is going to cost money.”

No shit.

He leans back in his chair, pulling his hands to his chest and resting them on his stomach. “Lawyers are like weddings. You get what you pay for.”

I fail to tell him what a horrible analogy that is. Instead, I glance down at the business card in my hand. He came highly recommended and I knew it was going to be expensive, but I had no idea it would be this expensive. I’ll need a second job. Maybe even a third one. Actually, I’m going to have to rob a damn bank.

“And there’s no guarantee the judge will rule in my favor?”

“The only promise I can make is that I’ll do everything I can to ensure the judge does rule in your favor. According to the paperwork that was filed back in Portland, you’ve put yourself in a tough spot. This will take time.”

“All I have is time,” I mumble. “I’ll be back as soon as I get my first paycheck.”

He has me set up an appointment through his secretary and then sends me on my way, back out into the Texas heat.

I’ve been living here all of three weeks and so far it’s everything I thought it would be: hot, humid, and lonely.

I grew up in Portland, Oregon, and assumed I would spend the rest of my life there. I visited Texas once when I was fifteen and although that trip wasn’t a pleasant one, I wouldn’t take back a single second of it. Unlike now, when I’d do anything to get back to Portland.

I pull my sunglasses down over my eyes and begin heading in the direction of my apartment. Living in downtown Dallas is nothing like living in downtown Portland. At least in Portland, I had access to almost everything the city had to offer, all within a decent walk. Dallas is spread out and expansive, and did I mention the heat? It’s so hot. And I had to sell my car in order to afford the move, so I have the choice between public transportation and my feet, considering I’m now penny-pinching in order to be able to afford the lawyer I just met with.

I can’t believe it’s come to this. I haven’t even built up a clientele at the salon I’m working at, so I’m definitely going to have to look for a second job. I just have no idea when I’ll find time to fit it in, thanks to Lydia’s erratic scheduling.

Speaking of Lydia.

I dial her number and hit send and wait for her to pick up on the other end. After it goes to voice mail, I debate whether to leave a message or just call back later tonight. I’m sure she just deletes her messages, anyway, so I end the call and drop the phone into my purse. I can feel the flush rising up my neck and cheeks and the familiar sting in my eyes. It’s the thirteenth time I’ve walked home in my new state, in a city inhabited by nothing but strangers, but I’m determined to make it the first time I’m not crying when I reach my front door. My neighbors probably think I’m psychotic.

It’s just such a long walk from work to home, and long walks make me contemplate my life, and my life makes me cry.

I pause and look into the glass window of one of the buildings to check for smeared mascara. I take in my reflection and don’t like what I see.

A girl who hates the choices she’s made in her life.

A girl who hates her career.

A girl who misses Portland.

A girl who desperately needs a second job, and now a girl who is reading the HELP WANTED sign she just noticed in the window.

Help Wanted.

Knock to apply.

I take a step back and assess the building I’m standing in front of; I’ve passed by it every day on my commute and I’ve never noticed it. Probably because I spend my mornings on the phone and my afternoon walks with too many tears in my eyes to notice my surroundings.
CONFESS
That’s all the sign says. The name leads me to believe it might be a church, but that thought is quickly dismissed when I take a closer look at the glass windows lining the front of the building. They are covered with small scraps of paper in various shapes and sizes, concealing views into the building, removing any hope of taking a peek inside. The scraps of paper are all marked with words and phrases, written in different handwriting. I take a step closer and read a few of them.

Every day I’m grateful that my husband and his brother look exactly alike. It means there’s less of a chance that my husband will find out that our son isn’t his.

I clutch my hand to my heart. What the hell is this? I read another.

I haven’t spoken to my children in four months. They’ll call on holidays and my birthday, but never in between. I don’t blame them. I was a horrible father.

I read another.

I lied on my rsum. I don’t have a degree. In the five years I’ve been working for my employer, no one has ever asked to see it.

My mouth is agape and my eyes are wide as I stand and read all the confessions my eyes can reach. I still have no idea what this building is or what I even think about all these things being plastered up for the world to see, but reading them somehow gives me a sense of normalcy. If these are all true, then maybe my life isn’t quite as bad as I think it is.

After no less than fifteen minutes, I’ve made it to the second window, having read most of the confessions to the right of the door, when it begins to swing open. I take a step back to avoid being hit, while I simultaneously fight the intense urge to step around the door and get a peek inside the building.

A hand reaches out and yanks down the HELP WANTED sign. I can hear a marker sliding across the vinyl sign as I remain poised behind the door. Wanting to get a better look at whoever or whatever this place is, I begin to step around the door just as the hand slaps the HELP WANTED sign back onto the window.

Help Wanted.

Knock to apply.

DESPERATELY NEEDED!!

BEAT ON THE DAMN DOOR!!

I laugh when I read the alterations made to the sign. Maybe this is fate. I desperately need a second job and whoever this is desperately needs help.

The door then opens further, and I’m suddenly under the scrutiny of eyes that I guarantee are more shades of green than I could find on his paint-splattered shirt. His hair is black and thick and he uses both hands to push it off his forehead, revealing even more of his face. His eyes are wide and full of anxiety at first, but after taking me in, he lets out a sigh. It’s almost as if he’s acknowledging that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be and he’s relieved I’m finally here.

He stares at me with a concentrated expression for several seconds. I shift on my feet and glance away. Not because I’m uncomfortable, but because the way he stares at me is oddly comforting. It’s probably the first time I’ve felt welcome since I’ve been back in Texas.

“Are you here to save me?” he asks, pulling my attention back to his eyes. He’s smiling, holding the door open with his elbow. He assesses me from head to toe and I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking.

I glance at the HELP WANTED sign and run through a million scenarios of what could happen if I answer his question with a yes and follow him inside this building.

The worst scenario I can come up with is one that would end with my murder. Sadly, that’s not enough of a deterrent, considering the month I’ve had.

“Are you the one hiring?” I ask him.

“If you’re the one applying.”

His voice is overtly friendly. I’m not used to overt friendliness, and I don’t know what to do with it.

“I have a few questions before I agree to help you,” I say, proud of myself for not being so willingly killable.

He grabs the HELP WANTED sign and pulls it away from the window. He tosses it inside the building and presses his back against the door, pushing it open as far as it will reach, motioning for me to come inside. “We don’t really have time for questions, but I promise I won’t torture, rape, or kill you if that helps.”

His voice is still pleasant, despite his phrase of choice. So is that smile that shows off two rows of almost perfect teeth and a slightly crooked front left incisor. But that little flaw in his smile is actually my favorite part of him. That and his complete disregard for my questions. I hate questions. This might not be such a bad gig.

I sigh and slip past him, making my way inside the building. “What am I getting myself into?” I mutter.

“Something you won’t want to get out of,” he says. The door closes behind us, blocking off all the natural lighting in the room. That wouldn’t be a bad thing if there were interior lights on, but there aren’t. Only a faint glow coming from what looks like a hallway on the other side of the room.

As soon as the beat of my heart begins to inform me of how stupid I am for walking into a building with a complete stranger, the lights begin to buzz and flicker to life.

“Sorry.” His voice is close, so I spin around just as the first of the fluorescent lights reach their full power. “I don’t usually work in this part of the studio, so I keep the lights off to save energy.”

Now that the entire area is illuminated, I slowly scan the room. The walls are a stark white, adorned with various paintings. I can’t get a good look at them, because they’re all spread out, several feet away from me. “Is this an art gallery?”

He laughs, which I find unusual, so I spin around to face him.

He’s watching me with narrowed, curious eyes. “I wouldn’t go so far as to call it an art gallery.” He turns and locks the front door and then walks past me. “What size are you?”

He makes his way across the expansive room, toward the hallway. I still don’t know why I’m here, but the fact that he’s asking me what size I am has me a little more concerned than I was just two minutes ago. Is he wondering what size coffin I’ll fit in? How to size the handcuffs?

Okay, I’m a lot concerned.

“What do you mean? Like as in my clothing size?”

He faces me and walks backward, still heading in the direction of the hallway. “Yes, your clothing size. You can’t wear that tonight,” he says, pointing at my jeans and T-shirt. He motions for me to follow him as he turns to ascend a flight of stairs leading to a room above the one we’re in. I may be a sucker for a cute, crooked incisor, but following strangers into unknown territory is where I should probably draw the line.

“Wait,” I say, stopping at the foot of the stairs. He pauses and turns around. “Can you at least give me a rundown of what’s happening right now? Because I’m starting to second-guess my idiotic decision to place my trust in a complete stranger.”

He glances over his shoulder toward wherever the stairs lead and then back at me. He lets out an exasperated sigh before descending several steps. He takes a seat, coming eye to eye with me. His elbows meet his knees and he leans forward, smiling calmly. “My name is Owen Gentry. I’m an artist and this is my studio. I have a showing in less than an hour, I need someone to handle all the transactions, and my girlfriend broke up with me last week.”

Artist.

Showing.

Less than an hour?

And girlfriend? Not touching that one.

I shift on my feet, glance behind me at the studio once more and then back to him. “Do I get any kind of training?”

“Do you know how to use a basic calculator?”

I roll my eyes. “Yes.”

“Consider yourself trained. I only need you for two hours tops and then I’ll give you your two hundred bucks and you can be on your way.”

Two hours.

Two hundred bucks.

Something isn’t adding up.

“What’s the catch?”

“There’s no catch.”

“Why would you need help if you pay a hundred dollars an hour? There has to be a catch. You should be swarmed with potential applicants.”

Owen runs a palm across the scruff on his jaw, moving it back and forth like he’s attempting to squeeze out the tension. “My girlfriend failed to mention she was also quitting her job the day she broke up with me. I called her when she didn’t show to help me set up two hours ago. It’s kind of a last-minute employment opportunity. Maybe you were just in the right place at the right time.” He stands and turns around. I remain in my spot at the bottom of the stairs.

“You made your girlfriend an employee? That’s never a good idea.”

“I made my employee a girlfriend. An even worse idea.” He pauses at the top of the stairs and turns around, looking down at me. “What’s your name?”

“Auburn.”

His gaze falls to my hair, which is understandable. Everyone assumes I was named Auburn due to my hair color, but it’s strawberry blond at best. Calling it red is a stretch.

“What’s the rest of your name, Auburn?”

“Mason Reed.”

Owen slowly tilts his head in the direction of the ceiling as he blows out a breath of air. I follow his gaze and look at the ceiling with him, but nothing is up there other than white ceiling tiles. He takes his right hand and touches his forehead, then his chest, and then continues the movements from shoulder to shoulder, until he’s just made the sign of the cross over himself.

What the hell is he doing? Praying?

He looks back down at me, smiling now. “Is Mason really your middle name?”

I nod. As far as I know, Mason isn’t a strange middle name so I have no idea why he’s performing religious rituals.

“We have the same middle name,” he says.

I regard him silently, allowing myself to take in the probability of his response. “Are you serious?”

He nods casually and reaches into his back pocket, pulling out his wallet. He descends the stairs once more and hands me his license. I look it over, and sure enough, his middle name is Mason.

I press my lips together and hand him back his driver’s license.

OMG.

I try to contain the laughter, but it’s hard, so I cover my mouth, hoping I’m being inconspicuous about it.

He slides his wallet back into his pocket. His eyebrow raises and he shoots me a look of suspicion. “Are you that quick?”

My shoulders are shaking from the suppressed laughter now. I feel so bad. So, so bad for him.

He rolls his eyes and looks slightly embarrassed in the way he attempts to hide his own smile. He heads back up the stairs much less confidently than before. “This is why I never tell anyone my middle name,” he mutters.

I feel guilty for finding this so funny, but his humility finally gives me the courage to climb the rest of the stairs. “Your initials are really OMG?” I bite the inside of my cheek, forcing back the smile I don’t want him to see.

I reach the top of the stairs and he ignores me, heading straight for a dresser. He opens a drawer and begins rummaging through it, so I take the opportunity to look around the massive room. There’s a large bed, probably a king, in the far corner. In the opposite corner is a full kitchen flanked by two doors, leading to other rooms.

I’m in his apartment.

He turns around and tosses me something black. I catch it and unfold it, revealing a skirt. “That should fit. You and the traitor look about the same size.” He walks to the closet and removes a white shirt from a hanger. “See if this works. The shoes you have on are fine.”

I take the shirt from him and glance toward the two doors. “Bathroom?”

He points to the door on the left.

“What if they don’t fit?” I ask, worried he won’t be able to use my help if I’m not dressed professionally. Two hundred dollars isn’t easy to come by.

“If they don’t fit, we’ll burn them along with everything else she left behind.”

I laugh and make my way to the bathroom. Once I’m inside, I pay no attention to the actual bathroom itself as I begin to change into the clothes he gave me. Luckily, they fit perfectly. I look at myself in the full-length mirror and cringe at the disaster that is my hair. I should be embarrassed to call myself a cosmetologist. I haven’t touched it since I left the apartment this morning, so I do a quick fix and use one of Owen’s combs to pull it up into a bun. I fold the clothes I just removed and set them on the countertop.

When I exit the bathroom, Owen is in the kitchen, pouring two glasses of wine. I contemplate whether or not I should tell him I’m a few weeks shy of being old enough to drink, but my nerves are screaming for a glass of wine right now.

“Fits,” I say, walking toward him.

He lifts his eyes and stares at my shirt for much longer than it takes to acknowledge whether or not a shirt fits. He clears his throat and looks back down at the wine he’s pouring. “Looks better on you,” he says.

I slide onto the stool, fighting to hide my smile. It’s been a while since I’ve been complimented and I’ve forgotten how good it feels. “You don’t mean that. You’re just bitter over your breakup.”

He pushes a glass of wine across the bar. “I’m not bitter, I’m relieved. And I absolutely mean it.” He raises his glass of wine, so I raise mine. “To ex-girlfriends and new employees.”

I laugh as our glasses clink together. “Better than ex-employees and new girlfriends.”

He pauses with his glass at his lips and watches me sip from mine. When I’m finished, he grins and finally takes a sip.

As soon as I set my wineglass back down on the countertop, something soft grazes my leg. My initial reaction is to scream, which is exactly what happens. Or maybe the noise that comes out of my mouth is more of a yelp. Either way, I pull both of my legs up and look down to see a black, long-haired cat rubbing the stool I’m seated on. I immediately lower my legs back to the floor and bend over to scoop up the cat. I don’t know why, but knowing this guy has a cat eases my discomfort even more. It doesn’t seem like someone could be dangerous if they own a pet. I know that isn’t the best way to justify being in a stranger’s apartment, but it does make me feel better.

“What’s your cat’s name?”

Owen reaches over and runs his fingers through the cat’s mane. “Owen.”

I immediately laugh at his joke, but his expression remains calm. I pause for a few seconds, waiting for him to laugh, but he doesn’t.

“You named your cat after yourself? Seriously?”

He looks at me and I can see the slightest smile playing at the corner of his mouth. He shrugs, almost bashfully. “She reminded me of myself.”

I laugh again. “She? You named a girl cat Owen?”

He looks down at Owen-Cat and continues to pet her as I hold her. “Shh,” he says quietly. “She can understand you. Don’t give her a complex.”

As if he’s right, and she can actually hear me making fun of her name, Owen-Cat jumps out of my arms and lands on the floor. She disappears around the bar, and I force myself to wipe the grin off my face. I love that he named a female cat after himself. Who does that?

I lean my arm on the counter and rest my chin in my hand. “So what do you need me to do tonight, OMG?”

Owen shakes his head and grabs the bottle of wine, storing it in the refrigerator. “You can start by never again referring to me by my initials. After you agree to that, I’ll give you the rundown of what’s about to happen.”

I should feel bad, but he seems amused. “Deal.”

“First of all,” he says, leaning forward across the bar, “how old are you?”

“Not old enough for wine.” I take another sip.

“Oops,” he says dryly. “What do you do? Are you in college?” He rests his chin in his hand and waits for my response to his questions.

“How are these questions preparing me for work tonight?”

He smiles. His smile is exceptionally nice when accompanied by a few sips of wine. He nods once and stands straight. He takes the wineglass from my hand and sets it back down on the bar. “Follow me, Auburn Mason Reed.”

I do what he asks, because for $100 an hour, I’ll do almost anything.

Almost.

When we reach the main floor again, he walks into the center of the room and lifts his arms, making a full circle. I follow his gaze around the room, taking in the vastness of it. The track lighting is what catches my eye first. Each light is focused on a painting adorning the stark-white walls of the studio, pulling the focus to the art and nothing else. Well, there really isn’t anything else. Just floor-to-ceiling white walls, a polished concrete floor, and art. It’s both simple and overwhelming.

“This is my studio.” He pauses and points to a painting. “That’s the art.” He points to a counter on the other side of the room. “That’s where you’ll be most of the time. I’ll work the room and you ring up the purchases. That’s pretty much it.” He explains it all so casually, as if anyone is perfectly capable of creating something of this magnitude. He rests his hands on his hips and waits for me to absorb it all.

“How old are you?” I ask him.

His eyes narrow and he dips his head slightly before looking away. “Twenty-one.” He says it like his age embarrasses him. It’s almost as if he doesn’t like that he’s so young and already has what appears to be a successful career.

I would have guessed much older. His eyes don’t seem like the eyes of a twenty-one-year-old. They’re dark and deep, and I have the sudden urge to plunge into their depths so I can see everything he’s seen.

I glance away and place my attention on the art. I walk toward the painting closest to me, growing more and more aware of the talent behind the brush with each step. When I reach it, I suck in a breath.

Sometimes I wonder if being dead would be easier than being his mother.

Owen Gentry

It’s somehow sad and breathtaking and beautiful all at once. The painting is of a woman who seems to encompass both love and shame and every single emotion in between.

“What do you use besides acrylics?” I ask, taking a step closer. I run my finger across the canvas and hear his footsteps close in on me. He pauses next to me, but I can’t take my eyes off the painting long enough to look at him.

“I use a lot of different mediums, from acrylic to spray paint. It just depends on the piece.”

My eyes are drawn to a slip of paper next to the painting, adhered to the wall. I read the words sprawled across it.

Sometimes I wonder if being dead would be easier than being his mother.

I touch the paper and then look back at the painting. “A confession?” When I turn and face him, his playful smile is gone. His arms are folded tightly across his chest and his chin is tucked in. He looks at me as if he’s nervous about my reaction.

“Yep,” he says simply.

I glance toward the window—at all the pieces of paper lining the glass. My eyes move around the room to all the paintings and I notice strips of paper adhered to the walls next to every one.

“They’re all confessions,” I say in awe. “Are these from actual people? People you know?”

He shakes his head and motions toward the front door. “They’re all anonymous. People leave their confessions in the slot over there, and I use some of them as inspiration for my art.”

I walk to the next painting and look at the confession before I even look at the interpreted piece.

I’ve never let anyone see me without makeup. My greatest fear is what I’ll look like at my funeral. I’m almost certain I’ll be cremated, because my insecurities run so deep, they’ll follow me into the afterlife. Thank you for that, Mother.

I immediately move my attention to the painting.

“It’s incredible,” I whisper, spinning around to take in more of what he’s created. I walk to the window of confessions and find one written in red ink and highlighted.

I’m scared I’ll never stop comparing my life without him to how my life was when I was with him.

I’m not sure if I’m more fascinated by the confessions, the art, or the fact that I feel like I can relate to everything in here. I’m a very closed-off person. I rarely share my true thoughts with anyone, regardless of how helpful it might be for me. Seeing all of these secrets and knowing that these people have more than likely never shared these with anyone, and never will, makes me feel a sense of connection to them. A sense of belonging.

In a way, the studio and the confessions remind me of Adam.

“Tell me something about yourself that no one else knows. Something I can keep for myself.”

I hate how I always tie Adam in to everything I see and do, and I wonder if and when that will ever go away. It’s been five years since I last saw him. Five years since he passed away. Five years, and I’m wondering if, like the confession in front of me, I’ll forever be comparing my life with him to my life without him.

And I wonder if I’ll ever not be disappointed.

ABSOLUTELY-FREAKING-BEAUTIFUL!! A must read.
By Adirondack Reads
Star rating: 5 ++++ TOP FAVORITE READ

TYPE OF BOOK: Stand-alone

PLOT: Artist Owen Gentry creates art based on people’s anonymous confessions. However, he never expected to meet Auburn when she enters his art gallery looking for a job. The attraction is immediate, but can their budding relationship survive Auburn’s insecurities and her situation? Will the secret that Owen so desperately wishes to Confess keep them apart or bind them together?

Point of View (POV): Male-Female, alternating

HEAT FACTOR: Medium, most fade-to-black

LIKED:
-The amazing Art by artist Danny O’Conner .
-The easy dialogue and the witty humor that is signature of Colleen’s writing. That this book is about love and the sacrifices each one of us makes to keep that love and find it. The love between parents and their children; love between lovers past and present. And of course the love between friends. -
-Colleen’s token ability to add significance in the most ordinary things. Items like the saying OMG, sea shell soaps, blue pup tents, and holding my fist over my heart will forever remind me of this book.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE: Now that’s a double edged sword. The ending left me wanting more, and not because it was incomplete. I just didn’t want Auburn’s and Owen’s story to end just yet. There were also a few unanswered questions embedded in the plot. Although those answers would not be important to the story, they just keep you wondering. The HEA is there, however you are left to imagine it, just like the secrets left unsaid. But perhaps that was Colleen’s intent. To leave you wanting. Craving. Drawing your own conclusions. Although Confess is slated to be a stand-alone, Colleen has said in the past, Never say Never. One can only hope there will be another Novella like Finding Cinderella or Maybe Not. Maybe Someday we will find out, but for now, my heart is happy with Owen and Auburn.

FAVORITE QUOTE(S):

“Please don’t allow anyone to make you feel less than what you are”

“I’ll love you forever, even when I cant”. “I’ll love you forever, even when I shouldn’t.

“There are people you meet that you get to know, and then there are people you meet that you already know”

“That could be fate, you know”

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The confessions included in this book are real. Colleen had requested her readers to anonymously submit confessions to her when she was writing Confess. That, in itself, holds so much weight when reading this story. It was devastatingly heartbreaking to read some of the confessions. I hope those who had submitted them find strength in the words and characters in this story to change their situation and find their own redemption.

I’ll love you forever, even when I can’t
By Midnight Red
Confess starts out with 15-year-old Auburn and her first love, Adam. I’m not going to dwell on this as it’s a very heart wrenching introduction. The first ten pages are what pull you into the story.
Confess revolves around the main character, Auburn Reed. Auburn has recently moved to Dallas, Texas from Portland, Oregon. Auburn hate’s being in Dallas the place doesn’t really appeal to her at all; she lives with a quirky roommate and works as a hair stylist at her roommate’s salon. While walking home from work one day and thinking about how she needs to find a second job, she walks past Confess, a local art studio.
Walking home from work one evening, she notices that there is a help wanted sign on the window and ends up working the art show that night, hosted by the artist and owner Owen Mason Gentry. They’re connected in the middle.
They are both immediately attracted to each other, but Auburn is very cautious about getting involved with anyone. Regardless of her best efforts, they become entangled in each other’s lives. They both have secrets from their past and present that threaten to keep them apart and destroy everything they desire.
This story alternates back and forth between Auburn and Owen's point of view. With Owen my heart hurt. It’s one thing to carry guilt around for yourself but when you’re also carrying your parent’s issues it’s even more heartbreaking. Owen endured more than his fair share. When I read the last chapter, I did like that the author finally answered all of my questions about the characters and tied the whole story together. However, it was too neat and tidy and felt a bit rushed in regards to answering for everything that has taken place. This was my first read from this author but it won’t be the last.

Colleen Hoover has done it again!!
By kathy west
Spoiler Alert!!!! There will be spoilers in this review!!!!

Colleen Hoover, what did you just do to me? I read this book in one day because I could not put it down.
It was amazing, breathtaking, heart-breaking.
We start the book meeting Auburn Mason Reed. She is at the hospital visiting her boyfriend Adam for the last time because he is dying of cancer and she can no longer stay there with him. From the beginning of the book, you can tell that Auburn and Adam’s mom Lydia do not get along and you will see this better later in the book. You can see the love that Auburn and Adam have for each other, even though they are only 15. The last words Adam says to her are “I’ll love you forever. Even when I can’t”.
“How can a fifteen year-old-girl defend her love when that love is dismissed by everyone?”
The book then goes to present day and we learn that Auburn has moved to Texas and is now 20 years old. Looking for a second job, she sees a building that has a sign that says help needed and the name on the door is CONFESS. Having no clue what it is, she decides to check it out. This is when we first meet Owen Mason Gentry. CONFESS is his art studio where people leave anonymous confessions and he uses those for his inspiration to paint.
Owen realizes who Auburn is when he sees her but she doesn’t know who he is. We don’t learn how he knows her till the end of the book, and let me tell you OMG (which also happen to be Owen’s initials).

“Some secrets should never turn into confessions. I know that better than anyone.”
“My mother says there are people you meet and get to know, and then there are people you meet and already know them.”

Another person we meet in the book it Trey. He is Adam’s brother and is also a cop. He is shady and tells Auburn that Owen is trouble and to stay away from him. She doesn’t understand where this is coming from but she doesn’t take his advice.
As the story progresses we learn more about how Owen has been covering for his father and that is why he has been in trouble with the law.
We learn that Trey wants Auburn and will do whatever it takes to make her his, even if that means using blackmail against her.
We learn that Auburn has a secret that will change the course of the book.
At the end of the book, decisions have to be made. Will these decisions help Owen and Auburn or will they tear them apart?

WOW! This book was amazing. I immediately fell in love with Owen. I mean who wouldn’t? He was perfect for Auburn in so many ways. And I felt that Auburn grounded him, kept his head on straight. I hated Lydia and Trey; you’ll have to read the book to understand why. Owen does what he thinks is right to keep Auburn safe, or at least he tries to. Their connection is so strong that they both make decisions that could end up going bad for many different reasons.
Colleen knows how to connect with your heart. I have no idea how she does it but she makes you feel like you know the characters and gets you so invested in their story. This book made me feel so many different emotions; happiness, sadness, anger. This book made me laugh and it made me cry. It takes a turn genius to be able to do that.
