It's an interesting book in that you get to follow the thought process of a killer. You can watch him lie, lie about his lying, then lie some more. He was clearly a narcissistic with a Madonna-whore complex. And he had a thing for scat play or making people feel disgusted, because he talks about feces A LOT. His main turn-on obviously is not the killing, it's manipulating others to do something specific or feel something specific. This is very clear by the way he talks to Sondra, who at times he seems to worship, only to then degrade her - much like typical abusive partners. I believe this book was a way for him to satisfy that sense of power through manipulation even while behind bars, because he knew without a doubt the overwhelmingly sickened reactions readers would have. I probably would have quit reading if not for the fact that he reminded me so much of an ex boyfriend.

A serial killer recalls his crimes??

Gerard Schaefer hated women. No two ways about it. He was a serial killer housed in Florida State Prison (until being murdered by a fellow criminal some years back)with plenty of time on his hands and plenty of ink in his hate-filled pen. The stories in this book aren't for those easily offended. He revels in tales of death,torture,necrophilia and unrelenting sadism. These stories are unlike anything you'll find anywhere else on the market especailly considering that Schaefer was convicted of crimes along the lines of those he writes about. So, despite his claims to the contrary, the reader is left wondering whether he was speaking from experience or merely making it all up. Somehow I doubt the latter is the case. Highly recommended.

Rarely does my jaw drop...

One of the more twisted things I've read. 'Tis a collection of short stories written by serial killer Gerard Schaefer. Written both before and after his arrest. They are primarily written from the first person point of view, becoming a sort of literary "Henry: portrait of a serial killer". Schaefer is certainly not a great writer, but neither is he terrible and so he effectively pulls you into his mindset. Some people's moral compass may momentarily feel "dizzy" while reading one of his stories. It's rather sickening.
Almost every story details the stalking and strangulation of a woman. And Schafer obsessively details each murder, offering detailed descriptions of EVERY substance that the body emits upon death. Even true crime books usually omit _those_ nauseating details.
In the intro, Colin Wilson says he's never read through the whole book, as it induces a "halitosis of the soul". Well said.

Diane Bahr, M.S., CCC-SLP, NCTMB, CIMI, a certified speech-language pathologist, massage practitioner, and infant massage instructor in private practice. She has practiced speech-language pathology since 1980 and has taught her oral function course both nationally and internationally (e.g., Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong). Her experiences include teaching graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education courses; working with children and adults who exhibit feeding, speech, and language disorders; and publishing information and research on oral motor function, assessment, and treatment. She is the author of the bookOral Motor Assessment and Treatment: Ages and Stages(Allyn & Bacon, 2001). She is the co-chair of theOral Motor Institute.

amazing educational and reference book!

boy I wish I had this book in grad school... I might have learned something than what my feeding course had (not) taught me.

I am an SLP interested in feeding/swallowing disorders/problems. Unfortunately, formal schooling did not give me enough practice or confidence to pursue this area more. I decided to find resources to better educate myself and came across this book. For only $25, I was beyond amazed at what I got! no $100+ textbook provided with the wealth of PRACTICAL and USEFUL information as this book does. It seems like this book was intended more for parents, but I would say the book is a bit difficult for a non-professional to really follow. However, its perfect for SLP's and SLP-grad. students to learn from and use a reference. The book looks intimidating at first because its fairly thick and resembles a textbook and I was at first put off by it, thinking "how am I going to get through it?" Once I picked it up and started reading I was amazed at how simple the language was and how easy of the read was and how relevant and useful all the presented information was! The book just flows and you want to learn more and more as you read and what I like is that the author reiterates some important points throughout the book so you don't forget too easily. I usually dont do well with text and I am a visual learner, but the way the information is presented here, I have been soaking in the information. Each sub-category in each chapter comes with very useful checklists/charts that are so easy to understand and follow when going to assess a child with a feeding disorder/problem. The checklists are outlined as what the normal behavior is, the equivalent abnormal behavior, and the possible causes/fixes to the behavior ...(and thats pretty much the outline of the whole book) what more can you ask for as a clinician! You pull this book out and here is the info! You can make copies of the checklists and carry them around for your evaluations and treatments. the language in this book is also simple enough for parents to underastand (if you want to make copies and provide information) but in conjunction with counseling from the SLP. I think this would be too overwhelming for parents to understand on their own. this is Its a MUST-HAVE reference book!

It turns out she fell in love with him when she was 15, he 30 and she saw him stepping out of his shower with one of his many bonks. He declares more than once that he is twice her age with accomplished lovers that keep him satisfied....ugh. really?
Once she gets over pretending to hate him, it's pretty much gag throw herself at him every opportunity whilst being a fishwife over his on-going public tongue-in-their-throats amours - some guardian her brother-in-law proves to be, allowing his just out-of-school 'sister' to be lusted over by this cradle snatcher.
An early 1980 effort dusted up for 2015 - still terrible.

About the Author

Mark Jobling is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester, UK. Following a BA in Biochemistry and a DPhil in Genetics from the University of Oxford, he came to Leicester as an MRC Training Fellow in 1992, and has held a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellowship in Basic Biomedical Science since 1999. His research is in the area of human genetic diversity and the forces that pattern it, from mutation processes to cultural factors in human populations. He has a long-term interest in the Y chromosome and its many peculiarities.

Ed Hollox is a Lecturer in the Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester, UK. Following a BA in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge and PhD in Genetics from University College London, he spent several years as a postdoc at the University of Nottingham before taking up his current post in 2006. His research interest is the natural genetic diversity of humans and other mammals, in particular the structural variation of genomes.

Matthew Hurles is a Senior Group Leader in Human Genetics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Hinxton, UK. Following a BA in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, he received his PhD in Genetics from the University of Leicester, and established his group at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in 2003. His research interests are in medical and population genetics, with a long term interest in mutation processes and a current focus on the application of genome sequencing to the diagnosis of rare genetic disorders.

Toomas Kivisild is a Reader in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge, UK. He received his PhD from University of Tartu, Estonia, and his earlier research focused on mitochondrial DNA variation in human populations. His current research interests are in human evolution and evolutionary population genetics, with a particular focus on questions relating global genetic population structure with evolutionary processes such as selection, drift, migrations and admixture.

Chris Tyler-Smith heads the Human Evolution team at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Hinxton, UK. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Oxford and received a PhD form the University of Edinburgh. His research interests include genetic variation in humans and gorillas, and the insights these provide into our evolutionary histories and disease susceptibilities.

Excellent book with the most recent information

I purchased this book for a Molecular Anthropology class and read it cover to cover. The book is well written and well structured. Ultimately, the best part is that the authors use data from the most recent publications and they include information on the most recent sequencing technology. This would be a great book for someone that needs an introduction to human genetics, genotyping methods/technology, and evolution. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in human evolution, population genetics, or anthropology.

Harder to read than it needs to be

A good example of bad writing! The information may be fine but the book reads as if it were attempting to be really "scientific." Let me explain. First, I will say that I am comparing this to two recent books on my current reading shelf: The Essential Biology of the Cell (Alberts et al) and Weinberg's the Biology of Cancer. Both are well written indeed. This book produces entirely too many sentences like this: "In answering this question we can compare ourselves with other living nonhuman primates, or attempt to draw upon the increasingly detailed fossil record of the hominids, to discern not only the strictly human versus general hominin-specific changes (Figure 8.1c) but also the tempo and pattern of change (Figure 8.1b)." (p. 258) Can this be decoded? Yes. Is it more work than seems justified by the content? Yes. I admit to some bias here. I was educated in the humanities. I therefore asked my husband, who is a working scientist, to check my impression. His take? "Well, it is a shame it is so badly written, as the information looks very interesting. It feels sort of regurgitated, not properly digested." He also commented that,in fairness, he reads a lot articles (including some he writes) that read just a badly. One of the issues is the current tendency to put all the real information in the figures, or slides, or some form of graphic medium. The text itself is marginal. All well and good for a lecture presentation in which the slides can then be discussed and questions can be asked. This, however, is a book and should at least attempt to be readable as a book. It can be done. See especially Weinberg, above.

This book is a beautiful, sometimes tragic series of stories of fighters we all recognize. This is more than a "Where are they now?" report. The author is a former boxer and has great empathy and love for his subjects. The fact that he did his research on less than a shoestring budget just reinforces that author cared deeply for boxing and its heroes.

A great read! A book full of interesting people, their stories and all well written. But best of all I actually learnt something about a sport that I already thought I knew a bit about. Altogether, this makes it stand well above your average sporting book.

Born to win, paid to lose

Ever seen a fighter with a ridiculously bad record like four wins and a hundred losses, and wonder what keeps him going? Wonder no more.

This book does a great job of exposing the underbelly of the boxing scene. Journeymen, contra popular belief, are skilled boxers who are many times better than their younger, fresher opponents, but are paid essentially to "carry" the other guys and help pad out their records. The author strikes just the right balance between letting the fighters speak for themselves and leavening the work with his own asides and commentary. The book focuses primarily on the U.K. boxing scene, but the themes it recounts are universal, and pretty much mandatory reading for boxing fans, as well as anyone with a general interest in learning good definitions of the concepts of "resilience" and "courage" or that intangible quality so important in boxing, "heart."

Some of the profiles in "Journeymen" are funny, including a tale about a pugilist who was drinking in the local pub when he got the call that he needed to lace up the gloves. Other stories are tragic and downright harrowing, like the one about twin brother journeymen who committed suicide...when their records featured the exact same ratio of losses to wins.

The book makes a plea for less corruption in boxing, not by strident argument, but just by letting the cheated boxers speak for themselves. Turley has done these hard men an incredible service by bringing them out of the shadows of the boxing world and into the light. You owe it to yourself and to them to read this book. Recommended.

Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Yale University, is the author of more than thirty books, including The Anxiety of Influence, The Western Canon, Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human and How to Read and Why. An unbiased view by a great scholar

Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of Humanities at Yale University is always an interesting read, regardless of his subject. He is among the best read individuals in America. It is pleasant to read such a work about the coming forth of the religions spawned by the great American experiment. In this book he documents his own bias as a cultural non-believing Jew which does not seem to color his opinion of the Christian faiths he observes. His is an interesting critique of the rise of these American religions including: Pentecostalism, Mormonism, Seventh-day Adventism, Christian Science, Jehovah's Witnesses, Southern Baptism and Fundamentalism, and African American spirituality.

He seems to treat each fairly and justly as one from a background in literature and humanities, one with such an intellect and critical mind would do. History must judge each of these religious movements without the jaundiced eye of one who wants desperately to defend or equally angrily to defame the groups about which they write. Thus, this work is refreshing in the fairness with which it treats each. No religious movement is without its problems. Their founders and promulgators are always men and women who, even if they claim to be representing Deity or the Son of Deity, are mere mortals like ourselves. They are subject to foibles as well as we and few claimed to be perfect.

Among the numerous books that seek to defame many of these religions, particularly the Mormons or LDS, it is refreshing to see a fair appraisal by one who has nothing to gain nor to lose. Objectivity is something that is often missing in books such as this. Professor Bloom deserves praise for looking at an interesting, but not an easy subject to critique with an unbiased eye.

This is a very good book for anyone to read who is looking for a survey of American religions and who just wants the facts without coloration. In this area of human endeavor, one should be able to see the facts and judge for one's self, not have the author judge for them. Most of us like to make up our own minds and not have something thrust down our throats by someone with an agenda or an axe to grind. This is such a book.

I recommend this book highly as a very interesting and generally factual book. As with many of his other books, Professor Bloom is to be commended.

A classic

I have read and re-read this for years, starting with the first edition, and I have bought and loaned more copies than I can count. Many of them I didn't get back but I always figured that was in a good cause. Anyone who wants to understand the present-day American religious scene should have this basic understanding of the history of how America changed religions which came from Europe and how America invented new ones. When the Jehovah's Witnesses knock at your door, when a devout Mormon runs for President, and when a Southern Baptist preacher waves the bible at you but doesn't seem to know it very well - do you wonder where all that came from? Well, read this book.

God would be right there with Palin in the White House as her chief adviser. And her fans loved it.

Bloom makes his case that this new American Religion is an entirely personal experience of God(or Jesus), uncontaminated by scripture or exegesis. It claims to be a submission of will; in effect it is an apotheosis of the self. Its method is to invite God into one's own mind. Enthusiasm, that is Happiness and Joy, are the payoff.

But is it Christian? No, says Bloom. It is Gnosticism, or something very like it. Once engulfed by the Spirit, one's mind realizes that this material world is the present battle ground of Good vs. Evil. And that very soon the Apocalypse shall herald an End of Days. Yeah for the Apocalypse! Yippee!

Clearly Bloom intends the book to be a warning. America is the most religious of Western Nations. It is the most powerful on earth. And it has forged a religion of narcissism and self-righteousness that claims that this country is the new Jerusalem. And out there, were the Evil lurks, it will battle God's enemy. Meanwhile, out there, others are thinking the exact same thing about us.

I cannot fault the premise of the book, which is thoughtfully constructed. There is more to be found in it than criticism. True believers should stay away, nonetheless. While Bloom is careful to express his admiration, it can at times seem feint praise.

Given Bloom's profession, literary criticism, I thought he might prove to be a more compelling storyteller. Sadly, the book reads as one written by a professor. That explains the four-star rating.

His four published crime novels have all been optioned for film. He also has two short stories, “Hedge” and “East Meets West,” in the two most recent Mystery Writers of America anthologies. A graduate of Yale, Jon is married, with a son and daughter in college.

Terrific short story

Great short read. What's amazing is how much he can do in about 30 pages....fast moving plot, interesting characters, snappy language and character development that some authors don't provide in a much longer form. Whether you're a mystery fan or not a mystery fan, you will enjoy this story. And then you can "lend" it to others!

Packs a Punch

Jon Stone is masterful as the writer of fast-paced suspense thrillers such as The Cold Truth and The Heat of LIes. His plotting carefully builds momentum over many chapters, weaving together a miniature symphony of character development and situational detail that suddenly explodes in unexpected and satisfying endings So I was intrigued but surprised to see he had forayed into the short story genre. This would portend a shift in style, away from complex development towards something simpler.

Yet amazingly, he has found a way to pack a novel's worth of suspense and intrigue into a 30-minute read. The heart pounds and the mind reels. It's O. Henry meets Breaking Bad, with an ending that ties everything together but in a way you wouldn't expect.

Give it a whirl!

As always, his characters are well developed, the story is well paced and the dialogue is engaging.

They highlight the role of empires as place-making regimes that organize geographic space as distinct territories. Militaries and missionaries, workplaces and households, all served as key domains of interaction within these territories, as colonial officials sought to manage the customs and lifeways of indigenous populations. Imperial connections contributed to the shrinking of time and space, but colonial encroachments also provoked opposition, which often played out in locations of everyday activity, from fields and factories to schools and prisons. Colonized territories sponsored a variety of forms of organized resistance, with full-fledged nationalist movements erupting onto the global scene in the interwar period.

Ballantyne and Burton stress that empire was not something fabricated in European capitals and implemented "out there." Rather, imperial systems, with their many racial, gendered, and economic forms, affected empires in all of their parts--the metropole as well as the farthest outpost.

This book’s de-centering of English classifications goes beyond the remit of most postcolonial studies in that it explores the classifications used in a range of languages ― including Arabic, Sanskrit, Chinese, Greek and English ― to achieve a comparative survey of the roles of language and power in the making of ‘religion’ . In contextualizing these uses of language, the ten contributors explore how labels are either imposed or emerge interactively through discursive struggles between dominant and marginal groups. In dealing with the interplay of religion, language and power, there is no other book with the breadth of this volume.

About the Author

Nile Green is Associate Professor of History, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He has published over 35 articles in international journals, as well as Indian Sufism since the Seventeenth Century (Routledge, 2006) and Islam and the Army in Colonial India (Cambridge, 2008).

Mary Searle-Chatterjee has published articles in edited collections including�‘World Religions’ and ‘Ethnic Groups’: Do these Paradigms Lend themselves to the Cause of Hindu Nationalism?" , as well as chapters in edited collections. Her books include Contextualising Caste, co-edited with Ursula Sharma (Blackwell, 1991; reprinted Rawat, 2003) and Reversible Sex Roles : The Special Case of Benares Sweepers (Pergamon, 1981).
