Sicilian players looking for a one volume work dedicated to combating anti-Sicilian variations will find 'Sveshnikov vs.the Anti-Sicilians: A Complete Repertoire' just the thing they need. (John Donaldson, International master, International Master)

Unlike some opening books, the author has shied away from the extensive (excessive?) use of game segments. He has preferred a balance between the latest ideas, classic themes and practical middlegame play. Naturally the key theoretical aspects are highlighted, but he also looks at important moments whenever they occur. There are encounters from just a few months ago, but Sveshnikov often resorts to the use of classic games to illustrate themes. (Grandmaster Glenn Flear, author of Starting Out: Open Games)

Sound repertoire, but you'll need to do more work.

Sveshnikov's approach to opening books - for example in his works on the 2 c3 Sicilian and Advance French - is idiosyncratic, relying on the analysis of a large number of games rather than concrete opening variations. In this way the reader learns to understand the openings, and consequently those volumes will stand the test of time. He adopts a similar approach here but doesn't achieve quite the same the same effect. This is possibly because there are a large number of anti-Sicilians, each with their own positional themes. Perhaps it is also because the author's great analytical contribution is to the above to openings plus of course the Sicilian Sveshnikov, and he has less to say about the anti-Sicilians.

Nonetheless, the repertoire presented is reliable and "main-line", with the exception of the 2.c3 Sicilian where he recommends a sub-line as an alternative to the main lines presented in his 2 c3 book. He doesn't cover the Rossolimo/Moscow complex, which is one of the two key anti-Sicilians (but then neither did Richard Palliser in "Fighting the anti-Sicilians").

I suspect you will need to do quite a bit of extra work with the help of databases and engines, and I am sure Evgeny would say "that's what you should be doing!"

The book is good, it offers simple and effective lines and it is well analyzed, I did not find any serious tactical mistake. The problem is the Rossolimo variation, which is not covered in this book, it will be analyzed later according to Sveshnikov.

It appears that our society today has forgotten biblical values in our everyday lives and especially in ethical business practices. Business By The Book is a great reminder on how God wants us to treat other people and that we have to be honest in all situations even if it causes your business a loss. Any losses you suffer by being honest, God will make up for you in other ways. I would recommend Business By The Book for its practical advice and how to achieve God's purpose for your business.

Good Guide to Business Savvy

I already have the book, and was impressed with the down to earth guidance. Burkett always references the Word of God accurately. I bought the tapes because I can listen to them while driving, making my car a "university on wheels." Listening to Larry's admonitions is different from reading it. Processing it from 2 different view points is so helpful. I definitely give it a thumb's up for someone wanting to build a business that will last for the long haul. Just like gravity works whether we want it to or not, the principles set up by our Creator (like gravity) also work when they are followed. Burkett guides the listener through every facet of a business and its operations. It's up to each of us to make the choices that will propel us forward successfully, and the author lays those choices visible in a straight forward, down to earth manner. The rest is up to us to follow through.

It's like being hit over the head with a brick.

I used this book as a teaching tool for my Business Ministry Class. Each week we would go through a chapter and discuss how it applies to our everyday business decisions. I found myself constantly be challenged by what I thought was right vs what God wants us to do. I did not agree with everything the author stated, but darn near most of it. As one of our members said, "Before we went over the lesson I would have made decisions I would have regretted. Now the decisions I make reflect closer to what God wants."

I highly recommend not only reading the book, but writing down your thoughts about each chapter and how you either need to make changes or keep on the path your on.

Plainly put, solid

Wentworth's "Geometry" was written around 1900 and served as a standard for teaching students Euclidean geometry in American secondary schools. The subject treated is synthetic geometry; absolutely no reference is made to co-ordinates, groups, or graphs and everything is defined and derived geometrically in a classical way. Throughout the book, definitions, theorems, and proofs are presented in a consistent and organized manner. Diagrams and figures are found throughout and are easily referenced. All theorems are proved and the treatment is fully rigorous. The volume really consists of two books in one and can be thought of as a modern rendition of Euclid's Elements.

The first book treats plane geometry and compass constructions as well as loci. This material is more likely to be familiar to most students. Here a complete treatment of parallel lines, perpendicular lines, methods of proof, congruence, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, chords, similarity, proportion, Pythagorean theorem, area of polygons, regular polygons, concurrence, inscribing, circumscribing, circumference and the area of a circle are all covered.

The second book treats solid geometry. This is three dimensional geometry and includes planes, dihedral angles, polyhedral angles, surface area, volume, polyhedrons, prisms, parallelepipeds, pyramids, 5 regular polyhedra, cylinders, cones, and spheres.

Several appendices introduce symmetry, extrema, and spherical segments. There is also a "recreations" section which provides exercises in fallacious proofs. A brief history of geometry and a table of formals is also provided.

The exercises range from simple to quite difficult. No answers or examples are provided. A few of the questions are worded obscurely and can be difficult to understand. However, most of the book should be accessible to high school students once they understand basic algebra (up to factoring and the quadratic formula). I would say the book can be complete in about 10 months by spending two days for every exercise set and doing a fair amount of the questions (please do not waste your time doing ALL the exercises, and opt for something like 33%). The theorems unfortunately are rarely named. That is, a theorem will be called Proposition XV but never something like "S.A.S congruence" which aids in memorization. Overall, this book is THE bible for geometry and makes for an excellent reference and learning guide.

Unfortunately, most schools have abandoned teaching the subject in this manner in favor of a more modern treatment that includes vectors and co-ordinates. I believe this is partly responsible for the declining performance of students in mathematical areas across North America. Nothing can replace the intuitive nature of geometry in training a mathematician in proofs and deductive reasoning. Instead, our students are rushed into analytic geometry and calculus and first encounter axioms and proofs in linear algebra during the first two years of college. Do you want to know why the angles of a triangle add up to 180? Can you estimate square roots using a compass and ruler? Do you know how to derive the formulas for the area of a circle or the volume of a sphere? Do you know the different ways of constructing a plane? Did you know there are only 5 regular polyhedra and that constructing more is impossible? If not, you are seriously missing out on some good mathematics! Strongly recommended for quantitative enthusiasts and contest competitors.

Other Recommendations:
For a gentler approach to plane geometry I recommend Harold Jacobs "Geometry". The best feature is that theorems are named and writing proofs is more explicative. His algebra book is also great for elementary algebra.

For a complete treatment of proofs and how to write them get a copy of Velleman's "How to Prove It". It is difficult to learn proofs from geometry books alone so this makes an excellent supplement to any budding mathematician. Will also train you in logic.

For a collection of challenging plane geometry problems in preparation for competitions or to boost problem solving skills check out Posamentier/Salkind "Challenging Problems in Geometry".

For a more challenging exposition of the same subject matter with an excellent set of questions the Russian adaptation of Kiselev's two geometry books "Planimetry and Stereometry" make for good reading. Very terse and rigorous, not for the faint of heart! I suggest you tackle it after working through Wentworth.

A Fast that really works!

The 40-Day Surrender Fast This is an excellent approach to fasting. The writer speaks from her experience as well as the experiences of 100 bloggers. This is an easy step by step 40 day journey to changing the things that block us from becoming our best selves. This book will help you to uncover the things that have you stuck and gives you the tools to personal success in your life, relationships, career, etc. Thanks Dr. Celeste for a fasting book that make you feel as though you are walking along side us through our journey. It is comforting to know that you have gone through this and received great success. I know this is possible for me as well.
Revision: I finally finished my fast and had some amazing breakthroughs. During my fast I wanted to have a breakthrough from procrastination and lack of consistency. I had been working on a certification that should have taken me 6 months to complete but was taking me over 2 years to finish. I couldn't seem to complete the tedious paperwork. I would start and then stop. As I prayed and completed the assignments in the "40 day Surrender Fast" book, I began to see some breakthroughs. On day 37, I completed my certification package and was notified yesterday that my certification was approved. Praise God for this breakthrough and Dr. Celeste for answering the call to write this annointed book. I highly recommend this book!

FOCUSED!

I was just finishing a 34 Day Daniel Fast and my "mission" was almost complete but still had a few bumps in the road. I decided to give up TV since I had just done food and Dr. Owens leaves the choice up to you. The TV seemed to be my biggest distraction in getting things done. Working through this book and listening to the conference calls every night really helped me focus and have an alloated amount of time to focus on God.

She gives scripture, "homework" and advice from a personal perspective letting you know that she just didn't write the book but she EXPERIENCED it! Thanks for taking us on this journey and allowing us to grow with you, it was great and I will definitely be joining again in September to work on a new "mission"
