Exoplanets: Diamond Worlds, Super Earths, Pulsar Planets, and the New Search for Life beyond Our Solar System, by Michael Summers, James T

The past few years have seen an incredible explosion in our knowledge of the universe. Since its 2009 launch, the Kepler satellite has discovered more than two thousand exoplanets, or planets outside our solar system. More exoplanets are being discovered all the time, and even more remarkable than the sheer number of exoplanets is their variety. In Exoplanets, astronomer Michael Summers and physicist James Trefil explore these remarkable recent discoveries: planets revolving around pulsars, planets made of diamond, planets that are mostly water, and numerous rogue planets wandering through the emptiness of space. This captivating book reveals the latest discoveries and argues that the incredible richness and complexity we are finding necessitates a change in our questions and mental paradigms. In short, we have to change how we think about the universe and our place in it, because it is stranger and more interesting than we could have imagined.

BOOKLIST, Starred Review
The existence of planets outside Earth’s solar system was long assumed, and recent technologies, including improved telescopes and research satellites, have not only confirmed their existence but revealed all kinds of surprises. The first verified exoplanet, for instance, was orbiting “the wrong kind of star,” a pulsar, or what was left after a supernova that was supposed to blast to smithereens anything even close to resembling a planet. Meanwhile, the statuses of solar system objects besides the recognized planets were changing as water, indispensable for Earth-like life, was detected as superficial ice and subsurface oceans on some moons of Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune as well as on big bodies in the Kuiper Belt, such as the
demoted planet Pluto, which thereby regained its title. Astonishment continued as huge, rocky “Super Earths,” inexplicably light planets, pure-carbon diamond planets, planets circling more than one star, starhugging hot planets, and rogue planets unconnected to stars were detected. These revelations, how they were made, imaginative voyages to five un-Earthly types of planet, and their implications for life and intelligence elsewhere than on Earth are concisely illuminated by astrophysicists Summers and Trefil in this marvelously fascinating and wonderfully accessible illustrated book. — Ray Olson

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Readers tour several bizarre worlds in this slim read, as Summers and Trefil, professors of physics at George Mason University, show how “defining a ‘planet’ has been made significantly more difficult” in the exoplanet age. Astronomical investigations outside our celestial backyard are ripe with paradigm shifts because scientists suffered “the curse of the single example”: our solar system and carbon-based life. Detailed photos and illustrations aid “visits” to unusual worlds, including 55 Cancri e, where volcanoes spew liquid diamond; Kepler 186f, with its vast lagoons and black flora that absorb “what energy they can from the faint sun”; and a rogue planet wandering dark space, where any life “must see in the infrared” and be warmed by the planet’s core. The authors temper runaway imaginations with scientific uncertainties about each location, and they reexamine the Drake equation—used in the search for extraterrestrial life—in light of our current understanding of exosystem frequency and dynamics. Summers and Trefil write confidently and straightforwardly for lay readers, who will long ponder what planets circle other suns and the peculiar possibilities of life beyond our blue marble. Illus.

KIRKUS REVIEW
A comprehensive introduction to the thousands of newly discovered planets beyond our solar system, which are beautiful and mind-bending in their diversity—and those are just the ones we know of.
Though astronomers had long predicted that there were other solar systems out there, only in the past decade has satellite telescope technology been able to confirm the existence of an enormous number of exoplanets, “planets outside our solar system. Even more significant than their abundance is their diversity, and even more astonishing than their diversity is, in some cases, their very existence—many of these worlds defy what scientists thought they knew about what was possible about how planets form and behave. Planetary scientist Summers (Physics and Astronomy/George Mason Univ.), who has been a member of multiple NASA mission teams, and Trefil (Physics/George Mason Univ.; Space Atlas: Mapping the Universe and Beyond, 2016, etc.) take readers on an exhilarating tour of the universe as we now know it. In a series of chapters that detail a variety of recently detected planets, the authors provide both a history of exoplanet discovery and a look toward the future of the field (which just may bear fruit in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence). “If there really are rogue planets floating around just outside the solar systems,” they write, then perhaps “multigenerational starships…won’t be needed to reach them.” These otherworldly planets are dizzying in scope and are a wonderful feast for the imagination, even as the authors back up their imagery with the latest research findings. Also included are a number of photographs and illustrations that provide a welcome visual accompaniment to the lay-friendly text.
Space enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy this exploration into the farthest reaches of the universe and the cutting edge of astronomical research.

While I was asleep…
By John P. Jones III
… for the last half century, a revolution of Copernican proportions has occurred in the scientific understanding of the universe. Michael Summers and James Trefil have helped nudge Rip Van Winkle awake, commencing with the first chapter, appropriately named: “Not your grandfather’s galaxy.”

Indeed, it is not. For example, there is a lot of water in our solar system. Liquid water. And not on earth. While the “grandfathers” searched (and in some ways still do) for water on Mars, and to a lesser extent, Venus, it is Europa, a moon of Jupiter that contains a large quantity of liquid water – warmed by tidal forces – under an ice cap. Two other moons of Jupiter also possess liquid water, as does one of Saturn, and almost certainly the now “semi-planet” Pluto.

Are there planets outside our own solar system? It is no longer a matter of speculation. “Exoplanets,” those beyond our solar system not only exist, but are probably more numerous than the stars themselves. The certainty of these statements has only come about since 2009, and the launch of the Kepler space telescope. It has focused on a very small sector of our galaxy, detecting 4,000 exoplanets in four years of operation. Furthermore, there are almost certainly more planets roaming free in space, that is, not tethered to a star, than those that are.

How do we know this? I felt the authors provide concise and clear expositions of the methodologies for obtaining the new knowledge, along with the proper caveats that separate the degrees of certainty from varying hypothesis that the data suggests. For example: the primary method for detecting a planet is the “transit method”, that is, the dimming of the amount of light the earth receives from a given star as a particular planet passes in front of it. The scientists have set up a method to eliminate the “false positives,” that is, examining the other reasons that may have caused a dimming in the light – the authors note that our sun’s light fluctuates slightly, independent of planet transits. And there are other methods, for example, detecting a slight perturbation in the star’s position due to the gravitational pull of a planet. It did boggle my mind to think that we have evolved instruments that are sensitive enough, and focused enough, to detect either the dimming, or the perturbation.

Life? Given the amount of water, and the number of planets, it is very likely…perhaps more likely on Europa than on Mars even… and almost certainly in other solar systems. The Fermi paradox (named after Enrico Fermi, who postulated it in a very straightforward question at nearby Los Alamos) remains: So, why does it appear that we are alone in the universe? Life, of course can take many forms, and much may be like the bacteria that surround deep-sea vents on earth. Others planets may have only evolved to the “dinosaur” stage, and never went further, thus they developed no radio telescopes. The authors then posit the concept of a “great filter” that may have made human development unusual or “lucky,” compared to other more static systems. The most disturbing thought posited was that there may be a “great filter” in our future, as there have been on other planets, specifically: “Once an aggressive, warlike species discovers science, they are likely to turn their discoveries against one another and, in essence, wipe themselves out.” Thus, a given society might only have a couple of hundred years to send out signals to other planets. Gulp!

There is much, much else in this relatively short volume. The authors provide insights into the all-too-human astronomer’s conference where Pluto was demoted from its planetary status even though most astronomers did not agree with the demotion, or the process of demotion. The authors repeatedly used concepts such as stellar and surface “chauvinism” to prod the reader’s thinking. Why did all the ancient Greeks believe that the moon, sun, planets and stars circled the earth? Likewise, perhaps most of life in the universe is not on a planet’s surface, and life can be sustained by energy sources that are not stellar. The authors also describe individual planets that have been detected as archetypes for others, such as diamond planet, rogue planet and water world.

In terms of sheer new knowledge obtained, at least for this Rip, based on the number of words read, this is one of the densest and most satisfying of reads. 6-stars.

The more we change or expand our views
By Natchmo
"Exoplanets" coming from "Smithsonian Books is neat. I thought I was a generally educated layman on astronomy among other things. Apparently, I’ve failed. For some reason I’ve mnssed much of the last 10 years of Hubble and Kepler, astronomy findings and interpretation . What’s next in upsetting our older universe. Simply, I’m out of date.

Where can I begin? Simply much of what we laypeople learned in school/college is outdated by new cosmological theories and interpretation. I do not know what is being taught on campuses today. but dig into this book.

Our Solar System? Nine planets? ‘Fraid not. Beginning with Pluto there are hundreds of thousand mini-planets in the outer system. Moons? Many more than we ever thought.

Where's the water? Not in the inner system but the outer system. Much is free water of some type under ice. All sorts of possibilities both in system and out.

Rouge planets - those flitting thru space without any connection to a star or an orbit. Now I learn plate tectonics among other methods can keep some of them warm and life is possible. There may be more of these than solar systems and planets throughout the universe. The search is just beginning. Now I understand some of the recent SF about rough landings on rouge planets with humans surviving and spreading. New ideas, new directions.

Planets? some very strange things. There is a planet circulating its sun in 17 hours. It is within the outer edge of the star’s photosphere. It is dark.

Formation theories? Change is the normal order of the day. And the future, searching for life on different forms of planets raises new ideas. The issues are the how and the what - all hypotheticals. A good introduction.

I rate this book a five. However I can’t figure out if this book is for AP Science, college introductory astronomy or just a general read for all us “uneducated" adults.. Your choice.

A 5-Exoplanet - I Mean 5-Star - Rating! Absolutely Delightful! Feed Your Inner Nascent Astronomer!
By X. Fossor
This is a relatively slim volume on a fascinating subject. So already two things going for it. But the style and structure are also fantastic; the authors write in a relaxed and accessible style (so that those of us who have basic or limited knowledge in the area don't feel lost and overwhelmed) and the structure is such that it all makes sense (as the authors move from the history of exoplanets to a discussion that works its way outward from our solar system into the great beyond (no, not that Great Beyond!). Chapters 1-4 serve to introduce the subject and define the the "problem" (just what exactly is a planet, anyway?); chapter 5 discusses the hero of the day (the Kepler spacecraft), chapters 6-10 discuss really strange planets (and they are really strange); and chapters 11-14 (and epilogue) tie up the book with a discussion about life on Earth, life and intelligence elsewhere, and the Fermi Paradox (where is everybody?).

I think you'll find this a fun read. It took me a very relaxed 7-10 days to make my way through it. This is a book I think you'll want to mark up to spur on additional research and reading.

No major issues with the content, style, or structure whatsoever. I did have two quibbles, however (minor, to be sure). First, I think the jacket price is a bit steep (at $29.95). Amazon's pre-order price, I think, is far more reasonable ($21.40 at the time of this review).

Second, I wonder if the authors are aware of the underlying conceit in both time and space as they express their views. They admit that scientists have always been a bit chauvinistic and I believe they have tried very hard not to be. Yet it is there. So when I say "conceited in both time and space" I mean that they fall into the trap of writing in a way that says what we know today is what we KNOW (as opposed to what we postulate today; "conceit in time") and what we know we KNOW better than those other pretenders (say, theologians, philosophers, etc.; "conceit in space"). I'm being a little harsh here, but the point I want to make is that a little humility goes a long way. Science changes and it will change again. For example, if you compared what we "know" today to what was in the science textbooks I used in high school 40 years ago you'd wonder what those scientists back then were smoking (and they claimed they KNEW!). So saying "we believe," "we suspect," "the current thinking is..." goes much further (with me, anyway) than "we know."

But as I said, minor quibbles.

A fun read. A blast. Treat yourself. 5 stars. (Or should I say, "5 exoplanets!"?)

The author/artist's trademark cut-paper collages add distinction to a tale of a toad who saves three frogs from a flood?and from endless bickering. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1 Although there's not as much depth as in Frederick (1966) or as much whimsy as in Alexander. . . (1969, both Pantheon), this is still a fine choice for spring story hours. Three childlike frogs spend their days bickering and baiting each other: it's mine, claims one about the water. Another purports ownership of the earthor a wormor a butterflyor whatever. It isn't until disaster almost stikes and they are saved by a toad that Milton, Rupert and Lydia realize that private ownership isn't that important. Whether grumbling for the sake of being difficult or dancing with delight, Lionni's frogs spring to life. Collages of marbled-textured paper, all in cool, crisp, spring-like colors against a stark white background, are a perfect match for this story of selfishness on the pond, carried out in beautifully simple line and language. Cute story and illistrations
By Matt and Amy Snyder
Leo Lionni's books are all cute and fun to read. We bought this book because our child was given the stuffed frog when he was in the hospital. I'm a sucker for books that have character stuffed animals to hold while we're reading the book.

A story about sharing.
By Ann Marie Grumm
Bicker Bicker Bicker. That's what these three frogs do all day long. It's mine, it's mine, it's mine! Tragedy strikes and an old toad saves the day. The three frogs seem to grow up without even realizing it! An ideal read-aloud.

LIONNI GIVES US ANOTHER IMPORTANT LIFE LESSON WITH THIS ONE
By D. Blankenship
Leo Lionni has created another wonderful little lesson with this parable like story, "It's mine. His insight to human behavior and his ability to reduce very complicated problems down to a level that a small child can easily understand is one of his strongest, one of many, skills and he certainly kept true to his form with this little offering.

We have three little frogs, Milton, Rupert, and Lydia who live on a wonderful little island covered with ferns and smooth pebbles in the middle of Rainbow Pond. There are bugs to eat, sunshine to enjoy and a rather carefree life. All is well...or is it? Well, I have to report, and am sorry to do so, that all was not well because the three little frogs actually spent most of their days being quarrelsome and bickering, bickering and bickering. They did not want to share the nice pond, the island or even the nice fresh air.

One day a large toad showed up from the other side of the island and informed them that they were disturbing the peace of there entire little world, including his and that they must stop their fighting and arguing at once. Of course little frogs being what they are paid the toad no heed.

One day a storm came up. There was much rain and the water rose. The island slowly began sinking into the murky waters. The little frogs are losing it all; they are seemingly doomed! Their little world and possibly their lives were vanishing. Is there nothing that can save them?

Well of course there was, and through their being jerked from the jaws of disaster the learned that their little world was a very nice place indeed and that their constant arguing and attitude of mine, mine, mine was rather counter productive to a nice peaceful life.

The book is well illustrated with typical Lionni illustrations which anyone who is familiar with this author's work will know are very, very good. The text is simple and perfect for either the preschooler or first grader. It is a good beginning readier and an excellent group read where good lessons in life can be learned. Actually, we adults can learn from it too.

Setting scenes.
By Geoff the SFCrowsnest guru
One of the books I was interested in having a look at from Michael Wiese Productions was this one, ‘Master Shots Vol. 3’. I did wonder when it arrived whether I should have seen the earlier two volumes first, but each book is very much a standalone, dealing with how to get the best use of a scene in the film camera. This volume points out how to get the most out of a scene. Christopher Kenworthy obviously targets the film director but the techniques shown can also be useful for the comicbook artist and even has a knock-on effect for the prose writer because it helps visualise the scene you want to describe.
The biggest surprise was seeing so many SF sourced films being used, including ‘Blade Runner’, ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ and ‘Star Wars’, although there are others like ‘War Horse’ and ‘Leon: The Professional’ as well. All of these are used to highlight the 100 examples that Kenworthy uses to make various points varying from actor or camera movement within a scene and to make the action interesting.
I found it very much an eye-opener and have already begun to wonder how it will affect my film watching for this kind of detail, especially as the pros themselves have these books for reference in their own collections.
It would have been interesting to see examples of where it doesn’t work as well as a contrast but then I’ve frequently said that of such books because you become mindful of what mistakes not to make.
In some respects, I found this book a fast read, however it isn’t really designed to bog you down with words because what you really want from this book is how to set up your scenes and even get the best performance from the cast involved. I suspect if you found this book useful, you’ll also pick up the earlier two volumes as well.

Picture This!
By Christina Hamlett
Back when I was 10 and forced to endure a week of Girl Scout camp in the Pacific Northwest (for parental reasons that, frankly, still escape me), I recall a gaggle of us trekking into the woods on a quest for blackberries. “Do you think we’ll get lost?” one of my friends nervously asked. “No way!” I replied, proudly informing them that, “I have a compass!” It was new. It was shiny. It even had the official Girl Scout trefoil stamped on the back as testament to its authenticity.

The fact I had absolutely no clue how it was supposed to work – never having read the instructions which came in the box – was a moot point. Somehow, I thought, if (1) darkness fell in the forest, (2) bears started chasing us or (3) we came upon a strange village where no one spoke English, all I had to do was flip open the lid and it would magically tell me what turns to take in order to get us safely back to camp.

Technology, of course, has given us tools far more advanced than the humble compass. Movie cameras, for instance. Yet how often do the uninitiated fall into the trap of thinking that if they just point it at something, it will always yield picture-perfect results worthy of the finest cinematography? For aspiring filmmakers of any age, "Master Shots, Volume 3" by Christopher Kenworthy is a must-have title for their resource library.

The book isn't just a treasure trove of black and white images from a diverse range of films but also offers detailed explanations on how specific framing, distance, lighting and angle work in concert to deliver symbolism, rich textures and move the story forward. Many of the frame grabs are accompanied by diagrams with black arrows indicating the movement of the actor(s) and white arrows corresponding to the movement of the camera. As the reader moves through the chapters, the diagrams taper off - a clever device for the readers to figure out the respective movements on their own and, thus, be able to apply them to their own projects.

I especially like the author's quote, "If you shoot a great actor in an average way, the result is disappointing. If you shoot an exquisite set without innovation, the money's been thrown away. If you shoot a wonderful story with traditional setups, the result will be boring." While "Master Shots" is targeted to filmmakers, there are a number of concepts that can have just as significant impact on readers whose medium of expression is a basic digital camera coupled with photo editing software. Kenworthy's passion for his craft is evident on every page and the takeaway value for future movie directors is a better understanding of the look, energy and emotion they want their scenes to achieve before the cameras ever start rolling.

By David J. Patterson
I read Volume 3, and liked it so much that I ordered Volumes 1 and 2. I think there is a wealth of practical information, and these books are both educational and a good resource. Even seasoned directors and DPs can benefit from these books by seeing shots they may have forgotten about, or not considered.

My only complaint is the design layout. The book's type is unnecessarily HUGE, the illustrations are dark and sometimes poorly rendered. There is a massive amount of wasted space. The worst part of the layout is that the wiiiiiiiiiide book format is awkward to hold while reading. I really dislike this format, and wish the book was more compact. If the series of books were in a traditional format, they would be something I could bring with me to shoots, but the size is just too cumbersome to deal with.

My gripes aside, I highly recommend the entire series of these books.

Nat Geo makes Reliable Maps
By L. Johnson
I've never been disappointed with a National Geographic map from their Trails Illustrated line. All of them have trails and features that are clearly defined. The topo lines are helpful in figuring out just how steep that trail is! The best feature is the waterproof and tear resistant nature of these maps. I fold them up in my pockets and sweat and rain never cause any problems. I have yet to tear one of these. Big Bend NP has a special place in my heart as one of the least visited parks in the lower 48. Whether you are floating the Rio Grande or hiking in the Chisos, this is worth making space for in your pack.

buy the map before your trip to save time
By art_lover
Big Bend is a large park, so driving for up to an hour to get to the visitor station where you can purchase this map and then wait for the station to open at 9am is a commitment. There are free maps available on the park's website, but none are as detailed as this National Geographic map. I used this map to hike the South Rim trail and to plan the rest of my trip to Big Bend. The map is made from a nice durable material so it resists tears. No complaints.

Good trail information, durable material
By The Global Wanderer
Like the whole National Geographic map series, this illustrated map is extremely helpful to anybody exploring Big Bend. We used it to hike some smaller hikes and the information was very reliable. The durable paper is helpful in the extreme climate of Big Bend as it is likely that your sweat or drink from your water bottle will eventually touch the map. I always folded the map to fit the pockets of my hiking shorts without causing any wear or tear. Great product!

A "Must Have" Resource for ALL Elementary Teachers & Counselors!
By Mrs. Beez Learning company
If "Don't Call Me a Tattletale" had been available when I was teaching in the classroom, I know I would have used it every year as a key resource in supporting my students interpersonal, problem solving skills. This book explains the difference between 'tattling' and 'reporting' in such a clear and direct way that regardless of students' age or grade, this would be an appropriate resource for everyone to use.

The perfect ice breaker to talk to your kids about bullying
By L. Posthuma
As a mother of young children, I am grateful that there is a book about bullying geared towards younger elementary school aged children since that is the time of life when most kids first encounter the subject. Written in "kid" language with realistic, age-appropriate conflict, this book provided me with a teaching tool to discuss multiple perspectives on the topic - the aggressor's, the victim's, and the bystander's.

I also loved how the resolution to the conflict of the story was so easily grasped by my kids. The theme of the book at its core is "The Golden Rule", why it's important for us to treat others the way we want to be treated. Empathy is an emotion that many children need to be guided through to understand, and I enjoyed how well this story lent itself to that teachable moment.

Apart from the story itself, I found the illustrations captivating. Even before we read the words in the book, my children were identifying the emotion of the story by the expressions on the faces of the characters. I can say without reservation that the artist captured the true essence of how each character in the story would have felt in her depictions - the art is absolutely beautiful.

This book is an ideal teaching tool for any parent, educator, or counselor, and I would highly recommend it.

Helpful with elementary daughter
By Ryan D. Nelson
This is a wonderful children's book with great illustrations. My daughter was being harassed at school and this book helped me guide her through how she could best handle the situation without feeling like she was tattling. My little one can also enjoy the story because of the beautiful illustrations.

Turn Left at Orion, by Guy J. Consolmagno, Dan M. Davis

Turn Left at Orion is a guidebook for beginning amateur astronomers. The Moon, planets and nearly a hundred deep sky objects, visible in the Northern hemisphere, are shown exactly as they appear in a small telescope (50-75 mm, or 2-3 inches aperture). The book provides all the information you need to find these, and other objects, in the night sky. There are plenty of maps to get you located, and the large format drawings accurately depict what you can expect to see. For each object there is information on the current state of our astronomical knowledge. Unlike many guides to the night sky, this one is specifically written for observers using small telescopes. No previous knowledge of astronomy is needed, and since the descriptions are non-technical, sky-watchers of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy and profit from this book. In the revised edition of this successful book, first published in 1989, the authors have brought information on the planets and eclipses up to date and extended the tables to the year AD 2006.

This is one of the best beginner astronomy books around
By A. Anderson
This is one of the best beginner astronomy books around. The real gold in this book is the sketches. Not a lot of fancy photos that don't look anything like what you will see in the eyepiece. These look like what you will really see. I loan this and recommend it to newbies all the time.

New telescope? Start here!
By Michael R
Too many amateur astronomy books are haughty, if not insulting, about the mass of small telescopes that people buy or receive as gifts. Sidebars like "Trash Scope Blues" are an example.
This book, written by two professional astronomers, points out that the small telescope of today is the magnificent instrument beyond the dreams of Galileo or Messier*. With that foundation in place they proceed to lead you through the night sky to view the most interesting objects for small telescopes.
They begin with the deepest coverage of the moon that I have encountered yet. There are separate sections for each phase of the moon detailing highlights of what is unique at that time of the month.
Then they tour the night sky, season by season. Their directions to find items of interest don't presume that you know the constellations. Instead, in "Where to Look" they start with the bright, easy to find stars, and from there walk you over to the item. They assist your search by describing what you'll see in the finder scope and the telescope and have illustrations of what you will actually see in the telescope. (Not some picture taken by an observatory or the Hubble telescope.) In "Comments" they describe what you'll see, suggest the eyepiece to use to get the most of the view, and give details about just what that thing is.
All objects are given a 1 to 4 telescope rating to help you choose the fun ones first. The Orion Nebula is an exception that receives a 5 telescope rating: easy to find, viewable in city light haze, with different interesting views at low and high power.
Of the half dozen astronomy books I've looked over this is the hands down best book for the new owner of a telescope to have. More than any other book, it will help you get the most from your telescope. *Never heard of Messier? Most non-astronomers haven't Charles Messier hunted the skys for comets and kept coming across things that, at first glance, might be a comet. After figuring out that they weren't comets, he kept a record of them so he wouldn't waste time on them again. As it turns out this list contains some of the neatest things to see in the night sky.

The reviews nailed it
By A Customer
I had a telescope sitting in a corner looking pretty but gathering dust for three years, until I found this book. "Turn Left at Orion" has turned me on to amateur astronomy because of its straightforward, assume-nothing presentations. Using this book at my own pace, I've begun to learn the night sky and get excited about using my scope. Even though I live in the city, I find myself gazing skyward every clear night, browsing a now-familiar sky. There are other aids you'll need as an amateur astronomer, but nothing I've seen is more perfect for a beginner.

Reasoning Backwards: Sherlock Holmes' Guide to Effective Problem Solving, by Gregg Young

American schools don't teach students how to solve problems, but ever since 2008, Japanese schools do. Fortunately for America, there are two strategies for solving problems, and the Japanese strategy reasons forward from cause to effect. They brainstorm root causes by asking, "What could be the root causes?" Then they start guessing, which is slow and ineffective. This approach rarely finds every root cause, so it rarely develops complete solutions. The better approach reasons backward from effect to cause, using Sherlock Holmes' strategy of observation and deduction. Problem solvers ask, "What is different when problems occur?" They observe the situation to discover clues that quickly identify every root cause, which leads to complete solutions. Reasoning backward is four times more effective than reasoning forward. This book introduces Holmes' strategy and these tools to students. For the first time, students can leave school prepared to be world-class problem solvers.

About the Author
Gregg Young spent many years developing and implementing traditional forward reasoning problem-solving systems in large and small businesses. His teams experienced both successes and frustration, which inspired him to search for best practices. After studying dozens of processes, he discovered the approach based on Holmes’ reasoning backward strategy. This discovery was a near epiphany for him. Now, his passion is to share this knowledge so that students leave school knowing how to solve problems quickly and completely.

Backwards Thinking Works for Everything
By A Customer
Gregg Young has led problem-solving teams and trained others to solve problems
for over 30 years. In his thought-provoking book he explains in a clear and
compelling way the difference between two opposite strategies for problem
solving: reasoning forwards from cause to effect and reasoning backwards from
effect to cause. He claims that reasoning backwards is four times more effective. The
tools based on backwards reasoning are not well known in industry and scarcely
used in education. He gives numerous practical examples of how specific
problems were solved efficiently in the corporate world. From fixing product
defects to production glitches, he shows how thinking backwards increases odds
for success and saves time and money. The principles are universal, not just
limited to business and manufacturing. The magic of backward thinking is
affected by how issues are posed. For example, I am a scientist and just used
backward thinking to explain why people dream. Dreaming is an effect which
must have causes. I started with a host of wild guesses about why we dream and
pursued many blind alleys. Then I re-phrased the problem in a way that
expedited backward thinking: "Why do I always wake up in a dream?" The number
of possible causes for this effect was quite limited, and I got to the answer
in a few minutes. You can read all about that in my new book, "Atoms of Mind"
(to be released by Springer). The point is, no matter what kind of problem you
have, backward thinking can work -- big time!

Best Problem Solving Book Ever
By psxman
This book, while geared toward manufacturing processes will help develop anyone's ability to identify true causes and solve complex problems. The initial concepts presented require some basic problem solving awareness, but are extremely useful in teaching people how to efficiently work through problem solving. The basic concepts once learned by the reader, provide a foundation of simple steps that are easily taught to other problem solvers, which can quickly improve an organizations abilty to solve expensive problems. The latter chapters in the book will prove more complex as the reader should have some experience with designed experiments or more than a basic understanding of statistics, but the first half of the book is a must read for anyone working in an industrial or manufacturing environment.

Handy Reference
By Amazon Customer
When I first saw Reasoning Backwards, the sub-title, "Sherlock Holmes' Guide to Effective Problem Solving", intrigued me. I expected a book of exercises designed to help the reader think outside the box. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the book is focused on analytical tools to aid in solving a variety of problems in manufacturing and business.

After an introductory section on strategy and tactics, the author introduces sixteen unique problem solving tools. Each chapter begins with an overview, followed by several real life examples accompanied by charts and drawings, and a summary.

The examples are easily to understand and clarify the principles being introduced. I highly recommend this book.
