About the Author
Michael G. Walling is author of several books, including Bloodstained Sea, the 2005 Samuel Eliot Morison Award for Naval Literature. An internationally recognized World War II expert, Walling is a contributing author to the U.S. Naval Institute's Naval History Magazine and has appeared on The History Channel and PBS as an aviation and naval expert. After graduating from Montclair State College with a BA in Biology, Walling served in the U.S. Coast Guard for six years as a commissioned officer and a senior petty officer. He has spent more than 45 years collecting stories from veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq, as well as those of pilots, merchant seamen, and civilian personnel with NATO and EUFOR in the Balkans. His research has included visits to London, Sarajevo, Baska Voda, Croatia, Halifax, Nova Scotia, St. John's, Newfoundland, and New Orleans. The author lives in Hudson, Massachusetts.

I would have been able to follow the story better with a good map of the country to include ...

This is a carefully written and edited account of the long and ongoing war in Afghanistan. I found only one typographical error in the 300+ pages. I would have been able to follow the story better with a good map of the country to include the provinces, main roads, cities, military bases, and the valleys where the action took place. The American military is afflicted with abbreviations for everything. The author included a listing of over 250 in the back of the book. Perhaps spelling them out every time they were used in the text would have made the reading smoother. I was surprised at some of the nations that had forces active in the country, Norway for example. The cool assessment of the British soldiers concerning the war was rather startling. Be sure to read the Epilogue which speaks to a sense of time, about corruption, and about a likely future, all in barely a page.
Finally, this is a serious historical work which includes 18 pages of notes and attributions for quotations and facts cited.

Personal Accounts bring the realities of war to the forefront.

Mike Walling tells a story of the Afghan war through first-hand accounts. When compiling any volume on war, it is often done through strategic and factual writing. This book has all the facts, but Walling also brings in the human side. We need to remember that humans fight wars, and these personal stories do just that.
A plus to this book is an incredibly helpful index and a list of abbreviations. The book is also well-made and the color plates are vibrant. The finishing touch of good maps and this is an outstanding book, cover to cover.

Comprehensive Collection

A good collection of first-hand accounts and general chronology of the U.S. operation in Afghanistan. There's a lot of information, although at times it can be overwhelming. This book is an excellent choice for students writing about this subject. Get the print copy or the epub version, so you can appreciate all the maps.
